I have an extra SMJLED PR and I'd like to find a good AA host for it. Anyone know of a good AA light that will take a PR bulb? Also, would consider any other 3V ideas?

The SMJLED has insane runtimes in my 2D light with pretty decent output... I'd estimate 15-20 lumens.

Thanks for any help.

Here's what I think/thought of it in an Energizer Quick Switch in a review with pics:

I'm sticking by that post, too. We just had a 20 hour power out(sounds fun, but not when you have a well and it's <50 in your apartment!) and I went right to the Quick Switch with SMJLED for tasks, and hung a CMG Infinity Ultra on it's lanyard in the bathroom all night.

I appreciate the suggestions, and I'll check 'em out. What about the yellow Rayovac 2AA Industrial model? Will take a PR bulb? I saw one at Walmart last time I was there. Thanks!

The various "industrial lights" also make good PR-2 hosts.

And I forgot about the Energizer quick switch, I keep an empty one in my emergency box with a LED dropin. Gave one to the mother-in-law also.

Lumilite METALIST is a great 2AA all aluminum Mini Mag clone that takes PR-2 bulbs. Google for it. One's on ebay.

I use a Nite Ize Mag PR-2 drop in with mine. Even a MagLED will work... but no heatsinking! Use for a few seconds only.

One more thing on the Quick Switch, they also have a small model, I guess it takes only AA/AAA.

I saw some newer, bigger ROV Industrial 2AA's that are PR type. But the older design, still around, is a bi-pin bulb like a Minimag. I have one of those with an SMJLED just plugged in, and the reflector bored out. It runs good on just fresh alkaline cells. Better of course on e2 lithiums.

I also like the Energiser Quick Switch with an SMJLED -- particularly as an emergency light for non-flashaholics. It's highly columnated beam may be very useful for a person with only one light and being able to run on AAs, Cs or Ds is probably why they give them away after hurricanes.

I've dropped four SMJLED PRs in Quick Switches for friends -- they love them. The Red Cross gave out lots of these lights after Katrina.

OK, thanks guys. So I went to Walmart yesterday and found a a ROV Industrial AA with PR bulb for $4.97... so I own it and now have a AA host for the SMJLED. Works great! Nice spot and good spill. It's marginally less bright than the 2D host which I attribute to the smaller size of the reflector. I measured the cheap batteries included with the light... 1.5v right on the money. I'll be interested in runtime. When they die, I'll get some E2's. Thanks for all the advice. :)

Good choice. I've often thought that those ROVs would give a lot of bang for the buck with SMJLEDs. Hmmmm...I've just gotta get some more SMJLEDs for myself... :sigh:

Sub, I looked for the Energiser Quick Switch but they didn't have any and I just couldn't let the ROV go since I knew it would work well and the reflector is better than most having numerous sections and texture (sorry, I don't know exactly how to describe it). It's also got a spring clip for your belt loop which could come in handy if your outside.

Yeah, I like the SMJLED's because they give a reasonable amount of light and long runtime. Happy 2008! :grin2:

The first time I ever set foot inside a Walmart was specifically to look for the 84 cent Value Bright 2AA host for the SMJLED. I've tried a few other hosts but I have to say that this dirt cheap host projects the most useful beam for me. The little plastic blob--I mean, "optic"--in the middle of the lens really spreads that hotspot out, the way I like my beams. The other hosts tended to produce a tight hotspot, which I find less useful since I wanted it for close range use.

Does Walmart still carry the 2AA Value Bright?

Yep !

Just saw 'em this evening.

Still 84 cents, including batteries !

Still available in choice of colors. :)

My Value-Bright (with SMJLED-PR2 installed) gives

a SPLENDID beam with a layer of FastCar's 5-ply diffuser film applied.

(Edit: Oops, it's the 10-ply material, not the 5-ply) EndEdit

My two favorite AA hosts are the aforementioned Dorcy Gel-Bright and the not so common Eveready 2AA Industrial flashlight. It is smaller than the Gel-Bright but still uses a PR base bulb and has a faceted reflector, probably about the same as your ROV 2AA.
Are Energizer lithiums OK for the SMJLED?They are actually providing 3.2V when fresh.

FWIW the 2D Energizer light with the "find me" LED has the same reflector as the Energizer Quick Switch and works well with the SMJLED.
