I'm new to the forum and need some help choosing. I'm looking for a light that has more area lighting with equal or more throw then a POB with a 4300K bulb. After doing a lot of searching, it comes down to the xeray 50w or the polarion 40w x1. What are the pros and cons of each? Is there a better option in that price range? Thanks for the help.

There are no better options in that price range. The great advantage to the Xeray is the price. If you don't need an aluminum bodied, waterproof, packable light then the Xeray would be a good choice. It's also going to be about 1200 lumens brighter than the 40W and has the ability to focus from wide to narrow.
If you need a light that's waterproof, packable, has a very fast start-up time and can sustain a lot of abuse, the X1 would be the better choice, although at near double the price.
Both manufacturers have made diffusers available for your area lighting needs and both lights will out throw the POB but the Xeray will to it by a greater margin. See these beamshots...
