Need help finding a emergency stove

Guys I need help in trying to find a multi-fuel stove (& a folding skillet) for the home and one for the car. Price range is less than $150 . Any suggestions?

Multi-fuel as in wood/coal, or whitegas camping type? I'm very fond of my Coleman 442 Featherlite camping stove, single burner liquid fuel... IIRC somewhere in the neighborhood of 50-60 dollars. Very nice compressed gas stoves from MSR for the same or less, I have a Pocket Rocket.I'm not sure of your intended use...

If it's for emergency use only check out countycomm.com they have some military style ones. They are cheap and I plan on getting a couple for my bug out bag.

Yea, its for emergency use. I was wondering when I wrote the OP (and back in Jan. with all the snow) how would I be able to cook food or even boil water in the event of a power outage. With the whitegas type it is recommended to use outside due to the fumes it produces while burning. Basically, I am looking for something that can be used inside of a home safely.

Cw mi, are you referring to the "Swiss stove"? They look pretty handy in my b.o.b. as well :).

Consider an alcohol evaporating stove with windscreen, like Trangia. Since an alcohol stove is the the safest option, and doesn't need regular maintenance or inspection. Alcohol is less explosive than petrol.

You should have emergency food in your house and car that does not need cooking, like flour, sugar, milk powder, raisins and peanut butter.

And for warmth, you need "arctic clothing".

Just be aware that if you spill it (the alcohol fuel) you will be in a world of hurt. Also alcohol flames tend be be invisible as well just just beware. I would never use a alcohol burner inside, the risk is too great unless you had it in a self contained non-flammable container.


I have a jetboil sol (non titanium - transfers heat too rapidly and will burn food) myself and find that the small amount of time to heat a liquid is less than a normal gas burner on the stove. It doesn't fit the multi-fuel requirements but is pretty fool proof and light/portable. I have it in my BoB but bring it out frequently to use. You can also use non-propietary stuff with it also but the flux ring just absorbs every scrap of heat (better/faster to boil water) Food I out on a small pan.

You can buy the Coleman single burner dual-fuel and put it in the car emergency kits.
For home emergency, I have a Coleman 2 burners liquid fuel (white gas) and bought a propane converter kits, so I can use either liquid gas or propane.

Well, the FIRST thing you need to have is a battery powered Carbon Monoxide detector.
Then I suggest you look at items like the Alpaca Kerosene Cooker.

Personally, in addition to a semi-covered porch (so I can cook outside) and a lot of camping gear, I have a propane powered "camp stove" and have long had the habit of picking up the 1lb bottles here and there until I had a good stock of them "put by" for use.
