Hi,

1) which do you recommend BOG or Malkoff? I am tilting toward Malkoff...
2) will it fit the SurefireG2L?
3) does it get hot if on for 5mins continueously?
4) I remember seeing an outside beamshot for both, anyone know where it is?

Thank you.

There's a lot of good info on the BOG Q5 super premium and the Malkoff M60 at http://candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=185776

There are also a lot of other BOG Q5 and Malkoff M60 threads out there if you search the forums.

Some answers to your questions:

1) which do you recommend BOG or Malkoff? I am tilting toward Malkoff...

I have them both, and they're both great. I prefer the Malkoff. It has a warmer tint and is much floodier than the bOG Q5.

2) will it fit the SurefireG2L?

Both will fit the G2. Some people have reported that there is a small gap at the top where the bezel will not screw all the way down in some units. I have tried them in the 6P and 9P and had no problems. I have not installed them in a G2 so cannot say for certain that you will not find a gap.

3) does it get hot if on for 5mins continueously?

Both have good heat sinking. They run fine in metal flashlights like the 6P/9P. If you have the Nitrolon G2 head, then you need to be concerned with heat build up potentially damaging the drop-in. If you have the G2L with the aluminum bezel, heat is less of a concern. Maybe someone who has run them in a G2 can provide more info.

4) I remember seeing an outside beamshot for both, anyone know where it is?

Outdoor beamshots at the link above.

So does the Malkoff fit the Wolf Eyes Defender? And where is a good place to buy?

Thanks!

If I remember correctly, it stated that "it will not fit wolf-eye". I think i remember reading it under the M60 drop-in.

The only places I think sell it is on Malkoff website and (if you really lucky) on the forum under marketplace.

ps..I already look on both the malkoff site and the market place...you I guess you and I are out of luck until Gene makes more.

If you register on the Malkoff site, Gene will send you an email when he puts new stock up for sale. You still need to move fast (or be very lucky) to snag one, though. Or you could do what I did and obsessively check his site multiple times a day until you get lucky.

The Malkoff is a great drop in. Floody beam with good throw. I have no gap in mine at all installed in a G2. It has become my fovorite light.

Optodoofu, How sure are you regarding the heat concern if the G2L have aluminum bezel? I heard the aluminum head doesn't dispatch heat that well if the body is not aluminum. I think I read the somewhere regarding G2L having a new aluminum head and many said it will not help with heatsinking if the body is not aluminum.

Dealgrabber's question is one I've been waiting for an answer to also. In fairness, Optodoofus said heat would be "less of a concern" with an aluminum head, not a non-issue, which is undoubtedly true. How much less of a concern is still an open question, I think, since testers like Chevrofreak haven't yet done runtime/output plots using G2s with aluminum heads. Or can someone point me/us to the data? That would be great.

On the heat issue with standard G2 head I but a Malkoff M60 Q5 in there the other day at work. I was in my office and received a call that I was needed and this was right when I was using my G2 at that time.

I set it down and was gone for over 30 minutes and when I returned I saw the light on and I was like :sick2:, I had forgotten to turn the light off.

I took the head off and took out the M60 and it was hot to the touch but it did not go :poof:.

I left it out for about ten minutes and then popped it back in and she ran fine. The heatsinking on Gene's items is great but I would not push it like I did.

If anything in a non-AL head I would say ten minutes of constant on and then give it a rest.

I have never run either the M60 or BOG Q5 in the G2L with the aluminum bezel, so I cannot say for certain that it will run continuously without a problem. I'm sorry if my post suggested otherwise. The whole point of the aluminum bezel on the G2L was to provide better heat sinking, so it stands to reason that heat will be less of a concern with the aluminum bezel than the nitrolon bezel. YMMV, of course.

dj, that's the longest I've heard of anyone running a high-powered drop-in in a non-metal host. Cool story. Any noticeable dip in output as a result? If not, that's news in itself. But then again, a light meter would be able to tell better than the eye.
