Zetex, which makes the ZXSC300 and 310 used by several of the guys here and quite a few torch makers, has some new LED driver chips including the ZXLD1321 boost controller

No external transistor or mosfet
1.2V to 12V Input voltage range, 1.0V operation with bootstrapping
Up to 1A output current
Claimed typical efficiency >85%
Thermistor input option to stop LED meltdown
12uA typical standby current
PWM and linear dimming
Adjustable soft-start
Drives up to 5 whites in series
package is 4x3mm 14pin DFN

There is also a ZXLD1322 buck-boost for driving LEDs from Liion cells.
And a ZXLD1320 buck with 1.5A out

Data sheets are at www.zetex.com

Thanks for the info. This looks like a nice little chip with some very convenient features.

I like the ability to do DC dimming using a simple pot (great for the bigger mag lights. The TDFN package may be a deterrent for some home-made mods.
