Just happened to be browsing Dorcy's website, and found a new picture of their LED upgrade module http://www.dorcy.com/products.aspx?p=411642:

The same picture is shown on SEARS' website for the Craftsman LED module as well. http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/prod...lashlights+&+Lanterns&vertical=TOOL&ihtoken=1 Has anyone actually seen this version with a side-emitting LED and what looks like a cover for what was original an exposed LED and wires?

Very interesting indeed. On the sears site I clicked the zoom-in button and it looks like the PR2 base says "Phillips Hong Kong". Could it be that Phillips is the real manuf?

Nice Find. It's interesting and will fill a lot of needs esp for lanters. Very curious to find the price of it.

Hmmm ...could be one heck of a mod potential, wonder if it has any regulation in it? Looks like maybe a little heat sink there on top.

Hope it works better than the 1st model.
The claim that this bulb can be used in a standard 6V lantern is in fact......

A LIE!!

I picked up a cheapo Eveready 6V lantern, and a pair of 3 cell Krypton bulbs, just in case the LED didn't work, i could at least overdrive an incan bulb in the lantern for mega throw....

popped the bulb in, pushed the switch, the LED emitted a *tiny* flicker of light, just barely enough to light up the die, then nothing

put that same module back into the Snakelight, and output had dropped by 90%, it's clearly fried

the packaging for the module shows the stylized outline of two conventional "Eveready" style plastic bodied lights (2D, 3D), and a *conventional lantern* (6V) as well , it's clear that they are claiming that this bulb works in a polarity-reversed lantern, when it *DOESN'T*

oh well, time to trudge back to Sears and exchange the bulb for another one

THE SEARS PR BASE 1 WATT LUXEON LED BULB *DOES NOT* WORK IN A CONVENTIONAL LANTERN

just *slightly* pissed off here at having to make an uneccecary trip back to Sears.....

The one I got was a dome emitter NOT a side emitter like the picture.

What's the price? There are lots of nice cheap plastic lights that NEED this. (unfortunately, I ditched most of mine)

Odd, the Sears link now redirects to a page not found error message.

Back on topic, does anyone have any experience with the Tektite side emitters, such as those sold by Led Replacements? They've got it at the same price as the Maglite replacement, which does not fit in most non-Mag sockets.

Flashlight Reviews looked at one in 2003, and guessed about 1/3 the output of the incan, like the early Nite Ize pr bulb.

The way Tektite handles thermal issues with their drop-ins is to way underdrive the emitters. The one I have is VERY DIM by any modern standards. I think the Nite-Ize LED bulb is similar brightness and cheaper.

Tektite LPR-2 Luxeon LED bulb dimmer than SMJLED
http://candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=123346

I came across a TerraLUX PR bulb I was not aware of. TLE-1F . For 2 to 9 volt flashlights and lights using 2 to 6 batteries of any size. The picture shows a domed Luxeon instead of the side emitter of the Tectite bulbs. Got mine yesterday.
The TLE-1F is noticeably brighter than the LPR-113 but not a doubling of lumens. Tint on mine is easily the yellowest outside the warm white household bulbs I have (V0?). With most of my flashlights it produced a doughnut hole. The only light it worked with was a 4AA stubby Dorcy Illumunator with a faceted reflector. I did not try it with my MagLED as I already have a Mag 3W upgrade in that. When I compared the bulb to other ones I have (LPR-113, SMJLED PR) the LED was a lot closer to the flange than the other bulbs. This means the LED is not in the focal point of fixed focus flashlights producing the donut hole beam pattern. I am quite disappointed in this as TerralLUX has in the past taken great care in ensuring the LEDs are at the focal point of fixed focus flashlights (QuadSTAR (TLE-3),The BA-3 adapter for the TLE-20).

I am also running a Tectite LPR-3 (rated 4.5V) with 4 NiMH batteries (4.8V). Much brighter.

Overall output
(brighter) MagLED 3W > LPR-3 > TLE-1F > LPR-113 > SMJLED PR (dimmer)
Hotspot
(brighter) TLE-1F > SMJLED PR > LPR-3 > LPR-113 (dimmer)

The Sears/Dorcy modules have not shown up in my neck of the woods yet so I can not comment.
