When I first started designing websites, I used a lot of black backgrounds - thought it set a "mood" nicely...

But I found after a while that no matter what colors you used for text on a black background, it caused eye strain.

Actually, I find it *easier* to read on a black background, and I'd have preferred to keep it that way... but in the interest of the apparent majority who feel otherwise, I reluctantly made the change.

Figured as long as I'm doing such a major change (204 seperate pages making up the site, and thousands of individual tags needing modification) I might as well just go all the way and re-do the user interface too. That top menubar graphic was just too limited in the number of items that could be displayed, and my "Zone" page was like bamboo - growing out of control and going essentially nowhere.

The dynamic frame format allows for virtually unlimited expansion and puts everything where it can actually be found.

Just wait 'til your eyes are as old as mine

That'll change

I like to add my opinion <= $0.02, and that is, Telephony web site is the best source for LED light information reguardless of what colors are used. Due to his web site and tests, my wallet is much thinner, and my wife thinks I am crazy with the bedside table covered with LED torches.

As for the new colour scheme, I like it.

Telephony, Please kee up the GREAT work.

why dont you give us a choice of old or new on the home page

First, there's no room for both.

Second, if I had room for both, I'd have to create 204 new pages and find some way to make them as accessible as they were before.

Finally, any time I have an update, I'd have to do double duty. An update to one flashlight entails editing & uploading 3 to as many as 5 seperate pages. Double that if I ran the proposed mirror site. Even more if I had to FTP to multiple ports to complete updates to both sites.
There simply aren't enough hours in the day to maintain two complete websites. I can barely manage with the one I have now.

Quality would quickly begin to degrade, and I'd start losing credibility within the LED and flashlight industry and hit bottom faster than a Kohler Rialto toilet pushed out the cargo hold of a 747.

And then there wouldn't be a website to ***** about at all.

If you thought you could have your cake and eat it too, you'd better think about having another kind of dessert instead. Because it ain't gonna be cake.

OOOhhh... Frames! Very nice. Wish I had the patience and the time to do the same. Very slick. I like it!

Well, I always like shooting myself in the foot so whats one more time...I don`t like it. I like the blue background ok. But I don`t like the frames. Way to much space is used on the left side leaving the right to small. And I hate scrolling left and right to see the whole picture. Maybe it works well with those high pix screens but all I have is my old trusty laptop, 800 by 600.

Now if my saying this angers Craig I will take it all back in a heart beat...I love his site...it`s still the best in the world

One reason I did the site like this is to bring it up to more modern standards, and that means lots of computers using screen sizes of 1024 or wider.

But if you're willing to get out the tongs and pull some of the bullets out of your foot, I am willing to compromise *to a degree*. In the interest of accomodation, it is now possible to shrink the left frame as small as you want, making the right side window wider.

I'm sure you know how to use your mouse to move & resize website frames on sites which allow it, but if not let me know and I'll tell you.

Craig,

Well done!!!

Blue, black, green upsidedown, whatever
Your web site is the business!!!!!!!!!

P.S. Would those UV lights you reviewed have allowed the white-on-white colour scheme to be visible?

That's good to hear.

I've just now set the default frame size as small as it will possibly go without obscuring the ProMetric ad, forcing a scroll bar across the bottom, and wrapping the text in that window. I could set it smaller and start knocking out the ad, but if I did that I'd have to send the ProMetric back, and you probably don't want to see that happen.

This is about as good a compromise as I can offer. I do pity those still using 320x200 screens or calling in on those handheld web telephones, but there's not much I can do for that.

Colours/layout/typeface... ..do what you like, Telephony; just keep doing what you like. You one of the good guys.

Pierce.
(P.S. Just occasionally spell it 'toliet' or 'torlet', will ya? Just for me?)

One more minor change was made a short time ago. This is something I actually tried last year, though rather unsuccessfully.

All of the handheld-type LED flashlights listed in the left column are now seperated by battery type: C & D cell; AA, AAA, AAAA & N cell; CR123 lithium cell; lithium coin cell; button cell; and "other" (like 9V and built-in rechargeables).

Hopefully, this will help someone who saw somebody with a cool looking C cell LED light and isn't sure what it was, but might recognise it if they saw one again.

They would be more likely to find it this way without spending hours and hours going through every page since I've already narrowed down their search for them. This is the basic intention of the new format anyway.

I'm also going to add a new icon today to indicate lights which I no longer have.
This should help slow down all those requests I get to compare so-and-so light with some other light, when the requested light was a loaner that I don't have anymore.

Good changes, yes?
