This one is small.... I used the top of and old dead 9v battery for the base- the "9v clips" they sell are just too flimsy- carefully cleaned and scraped, then loaded with a microswitch salvaged from an old joystick, and a Nichia LED (and resistor) I made a handy little light..... I suppose some epoxy would seal it nicely....

Wow! That's a cool little mod! Very neat and compact.
I am in the middle of building a similar one. It's gonna have two LEDs but no way as neat as yours. In fact, it's downright ugly with wires all about. It's just something I wanted to make w/a 9V. I figure the runtime should be a good while.
I have a few extra 9V batteries I buy in large packs. [for the smoke detectors] And had a few dead ones that I canned [cannibalized] the connectors from. I just have to get my mitts on some LEDs.

Gonna order some real soon.

Great job, Charliek! [I'm almost ashamed to show my unfinished mod /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif]

No- don't be ashamed! It's cool- I had made one quite a while back with leads on it... what I did was added a stiff solid copper wire in the center (not electrically connected to anything) and shrink-wrapped the whole bundle- what it came out to be was a sort of "flexible Goose-Neck" for the LED... let me aim it wherever I wanted to... I'll see if I can find it and take a photo for you.

don't forget the 5w luxeon mods...

Someone should make a dual luxeon/5mm dual intensity 9v clip on mod...

Good idea Isaac,
Just slap a 5 watter across the contacts...wonder what it will do? At least there will no be a fear of overdriving the 5W. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/twakfl.gif

In light of the recent power outage in the northeast U.S. as well as hurricane Isabel that rolled through the eastern U.S....my boys and I decided to make some emergency lights. Webley445 got us stirred up with sources, simple circuits...so we are currently procrastinating...er, sitting on most of the supplies that we need to build "many" of these little lights.

I ordered super bright whites, as well as some reds, blues, greens, blue-greens, amber, and a few that cycle through red/green/blue LEDs as well as the appropriate resistors & battery snaps.

Our only hold up is the "final design". Granted we may just end up making little simple lights with shrink wrap around the leads. I'm thinking I may want some of the little LED standoffs to "stiffen" as well as keep the leads from shorting out. I like the copper wire idea...I think our leads are only 6" long, easy to coil up and store in a film cannister/survival kit/tin...

Simple entry level fun for the boys and I...as well as a practical torch to be used for hunting/camping/emergencies that should have an extended runtime!!

charliek Thanks for the tip and encouragement.
I finished my 9V mod. I followed suit and decided to forego the wire leads for now. I didn't put a switch on it because I didn't have one at the time. I used a old 9V as the power source that measured ~5V. [took it out of my Smoke alarm.] *Edit* ..when I replaced it with a fresh battery. *end of Edit*
Then I let it run all night from around 11:00 pm and is still on, but rather dim at 9:55 am. As you can see from the picture, the date on the duracell says best if installed by Jan 2002 =-). So, I guess the runtime would be pretty long if using a fresh battery, eh?

Thanks charliek! This is my first mod from scratch. Woo Hoo!

Oh, by the way, this morning, while we were getting ready for work, the wifey asked me if I bought a new light. [she saw it in the corner running.] Hee Hee. I replied, "No, I just made it last night and it's been running all night long!" Of course, she just rolled her eyes. =-) I'm a hopeless flashaholic, I guess.

I've been playing with the 9volt lights, too. If you use rechgble 9volt batteries, then you can series connect 2 5mm white leds together. This is a bright little light...yes you overdrive them a little, but current is kept low due to the AAAA cells inside...works great.
