I bought this at BATTERY JUNCTION and it arrived very quickly.

Here is a direct link to the sales page:

History: I was disappointed that I had bought two Protons before, the first one would shut-down after about 3 minutes (defective circuit), and the replacement one had a broken (+) battery terminal. I liked the lights but never got to use them.

Now: LRI (PhotonLight) has released an updated version that is supposed to not have the same problem(s) that the first batch did.

So far, I've found it performs flawlessly. It is my opinion that this is the best multiple 5mm LED light ever, and it still compares favorably against the current competition in useful features and output for it's size.

What follows is a lot of pictures and very few words. I've already said enough, I really like the light and definitely will keep it in my collection forever... assuming it works that long.

Now the following pictures were taken with floating auto-exposure. The Proton is set to high, and I vary the Rexlight from low to high. Each time the Proton may look dimmer, but it's just my camera reducing the exposure for more light from the Rexlight. Consider each picture on it's own. Both lights are running a fresh Energizer e^2 Lithium AA cell.

Great review, I still want both though!! Will the rexlight tail fit in a MiniMag AA Incan?

FYI - the threads look dirty, it's a gray lubricant. I'll clean off the threads and take a better picture. I'll also try to get a picture of the (+) terminal. :duh2:

Would like to see old model, and new model side by side, if anyone had both.
To see differences.
Thanks

Here are some pictures after cleaning the lubricant. (I will be adding Krytox).

Does anyone have pictures of the (+) contact region on the older model? I wonder if those bumps on the plastic are new. They might be to hold the battery back further away from the spring.

How does the brightness and beam pattern of the new Proton compare with the latest Inova X5?

Thanks.

Looks great! It looks like they've worked out all the kinks that originally plagued the Proton. Kudos to PhotonLight for having the guts to do something new and different.

Great pics, EngrPaul. One question at this time about the light. If I understand correctly the red starts at low level and the white starts at high level. Both can be ramped up or down. Can the white start at a low level?

Geoff

Gee, another flashlight that i'm gonna' hafta' buy. :broke:

Sounds good. Thank you for sharing your info.

Hope you enjoy this new light !

Hi Geoff, I'm with you on that preference. However, the white always starts high and the red always starts low, no way to reprogram. :(
