I picked one of these up today. Not bad at all, great tint, nearly neutral slightly warm. Orange peel reflector. Head is no longer able to be unscrewed (without boiling in a baggie this is). Overall output is comparable to my Fenix L2D on high, if not slightly higher. Current draw from the tailcap is 730 mA. One thing though, could anyone possibly know if this Rebel is one of those "defective" ones that could fail in 24 hours?? Looks like it's time for some continuous torture testing with rechargables...

This is indeed the Sportsman Extreme 3 Watt Luxeon, and the packaging has also changed, albeit quite the subtle change. instead of a green background where the lumens are stated (old = green background, 60 lumens), this new one has an orange background stating 80 lumens. The green trim / border to the right side of the package is now also orange. After more scrutinizing and ceiling bouncing, the overall output is actually slightly lower than the L2D's high, I was being a little bit too optimistic up there ^. A little disappointing, but what can you expect with a Rebel 80 versus a Cree P4...

Whoops, I could've sworn the old 3 Watt said 60. Anyways, yeah, the thing to look for is the orange lumen statement background and border trim, anyone who has seen the old one with the green markings will spot this thing like a sore thumb. It is definitely a Rebel though. Sure wish I had my own digital camera and a photo hosting site account..

I saw these about a week ago in Wal*Mart...

L.E.D. is right, the packaging is the same as before except for the new orange trim, its not hard to spot.

The 2 units on the peg had emitters that were mounted very off-center. The 4 newer units just added recently had centered emitters.

The reflector looks like a plastic one with sprayed on texture. It also looks like a washer was added around the base of the Rebel, similar to the early Fenix LxT V2.0 series lights, although its more uniform.

I passed, as A.) already have a Fenix Rebel, and B.) not sure if these Rayovac Rebels are the defective ones...

The price is the same as the former 3 watt Luxeon model - I think the packaging now says "High Powered LED", instead of "3 watt".

EDIT:Yes, these are in the Sportsmans Xtreme series of lights.

I have noticed a little line of welding, yes welding, between the battery tube and the lower lip of the head. This is also kind of disappointing, as I actually appreciate the flood that my 1 Watt Sportsman Extreme can create by unscrewing the head. It helped a lot when I assisted my father in disassembling his trike ultralight in the late evening. That said, there is no way that boiling in a baggie or using a heat gun will allow one to unscrew the head. As far as torture testing, 5 rounds of nimh's and she's still doin awesome.

I hope to God this is not one of the defective Rebels as it's quite a decent light and I got a perfectly centered one with my favorite tint, but at least there is the lifetime warranty... I would think that Lumileds would have filed a recall to any manufacturers that bought the defective ones. Is there any way to tell by appearance if this is one of the TFFC ones or not?

I'll have to check my WalMart to see if they have them in. Not sure if I'd buy one though.

As more and more batteries run their course, less and less do I suspect that this is a defective Rebel. Still running strong!

As far as I know, that 148 lumen Rebel light is non-existant. I've seen a review of the Terralux Rebel version and sadly it was dimmer than the Lux III version and ran shorter, which makes me believe they're using older, less efficient Rebels:thumbsdow. I'll look for the post and link it if I find it.

Past the 24 hour mark for total running time and still perfectly fine. I highly doubt this is a defective Rebel. YMMV. A lot of these running sessions were done without hand cooling or fan cooling as well, to greatly increase the chance of any failure..

Sounds like it's not. If the package still says "80 lumens", it's probably the same emitter as before. Nothing appears to have changed, except for maybe the color of the packaging background.

ROV really does need to upgrade it though. I don't have the original one, but I've heard it's good. But with Rebels and Crees now being available, you'd think they'd put one of those in there and make people want to buy it more. They already have a SE 3C version with a Cree which I don't have because it's too long. I'd take a 2C version, but they don't have that, and we don't have a Lowe's store here. They carry the Taskforce 2C Cree.

Something doesn't sound right. The Nuwai Rebel is 80 lumens and 1watt on the package. This Rayovac being listed as 3watts and 80 lumens is the same specs as the old Lux 3 in it before. Just doesn't add up.

If this "new" one is truly 3 watts, it's WAY more than 80 lumens. If it's truly 80 lumens, it's way UNDER 3 watts.
