My goal is to mod my 2D Maglite. This is my first project so I'm a little in the dark on what to buy and how it goes together.

I want to use a PTS-2D Heatsink
3 Luxeon Stars 3W
Shark converter board

As far as a power supply goes it looks like I want 6 or 7 AA's so I need to find a battery holder.

I need suggestions on reflectors and battery holders. I plan to get everything I can from the sandwich shop. But if there are other places please suggest.

Also please let me know if I left anything out of my shopping list?

I would skip over the Luxeon IIIs if you haven't ordered them yet. The Seoul P4 U bin LEDs(Along with the Cree XR-E P4-R2 bin and Luxeon Rebel 100) have a bit more then double the efficiency of the Luxeon I, III, V and K2 LEDs. For the sasme power, the newer LEDs will put out twice or more light.

If you need a low price, DX has Seoul LED on a star for $6 shipped(Shipping takes about a month, they are also available at the CPF marketplace and at the Sandwich Shoppe).

This thread
would help wit Flux, Vf and tint.

Thanks...

That's awesome info. I'm going to use 3 of the SSC P4 on stars. Will the shark driver work?

Also what reflectors will fit with the SSC P4 and PTS-2D heat sink ?

Well, Nereus used the shark to drive 4 Seoul LEDs so three LEDs should be fine. They are around the same Vf as the Luxeons IIIs.

Seouls work well with smooth reflectors so I think the IMS 20 would work(can someone confirm this?).

Here's a question about driving the 3 P4's

Do I need it at all? Or what benefits does it have?

Can I just use a resistor to limit the current? I'll be using 7.5 volts to power them

I'm guessing by "IT" you mean the driver.

You could direct drive(3.5v to the LED, you probably don't need a resistor) them but a driver would give you more regulated runtime and more output.

Yes, the driver... Thanks

With the shark board outputting 26V is that too much for 3 ssc p4's in series?

I think I'm close....

I need someone to verify what reflectors fit in the PTS2-D and work with SSC P4 and Cree XRE Stars

Yes, the driver... Thanks

The Shark regulates the current going to the LED's. Since it is a boost driver you have to hold the input voltage (battey pack) to equal or less than the accumulated Vf's of the 3 P4's, which should be around 9.75 (3.25x3=9.75) volts in your case. 6 AA NiMH batteries will have 7.2 volts so you're good to go.

I have some questions too about modding a 2D with 4 or more emitters.

What do I need ? (correct me if I'm wrong):
4, 5 or 6 Q5 on stars
1 heatsink
UCL lense
4, 5 or 6 reflector
6 or 8 AA (nimh)
An adaptor for the cells
A driver (Shark or Maxflex)
Wires
Thermal paste

So... I would like to build something with 4, 5 or 6 Q5. In opinion, 6 emitters is maybe too much but 4 or 5 using 6 AA nimh looks like a good idea.
What are my goals ?
Driving the emitters to its fullest without damaging them. 1000mah would be pretty nice. Runtime ? 1 hour would be cool.

So: 4 or 5 emitters, ~1000mah, Q5, ~ 1 hour runtime

What do you think ?

Thanks !

It sounds like it'll work for me then. What current should I adjust for?

It has a trim pot that you adjust. The highest current it will provide to the LED's is 1000ma.
