Nichia\'s 10,000,000 cd/m^2 white light source

Nichia Corp. has developed a white light source with a luminance of near 10,000,000 cd/m2, using GaN semiconductor laser diodes. This luminance is almost equivalent to that of high-end halogen lamp products and conventional HID (high intensity discharge) lamps, and a digit higher than that of a white light-emitting diode (LED). A white light beam of 50 lm can be acquired from a round head of only 1.25 mm in diameter. The company will start sample shipments in the second half of 2005 as a replacement for halogen lamps and HID lamps.

If the LED put out 10 million lumen/sq/ meter, it would take a round head of 1.25 mm in radius - 2.5 mm in diameter - to generate 50 lumens. Don't know what 10 million cd/m**2 means.

Sounds like a white LED setup on steroids.

So a 50lumen the size of 1.5mm. Sounds like with a large reflector you could make it a laser beam!!! no pun intended.

With the "remote" light source capability, I am envisioning some of you modders/builders with a backpack device like the old WWII flame throwers, but with an optical fiber "hose" and an output in the megalumens.

Seriously, I bet this technology would be great for microscopy.
