A friend brought over his MiNewt 200 helmet light that had gone for an unplanned swim. He wanted me to look at it to see if it could be salvaged. The o-ring that seals around the lens was all squished out of place, which he said was the way it came. The seal being not-so-good let it fill with water. I opened it up and was surprised that what is sold as a 200 lumen light had what looked like a Luxeon K2 for the LED--not the SSC as listed in the database here. Can you really get 200 lumens out of a K2? The Luxeon data sheet says "typical" 140 lumens at 1.5A drive current.

I dried out the board and put power on it carefully and it all seemed OK, so he hooked it back up the battery pack and all seemed fine, but it does run hot--the back of the housing gets up to about 48C-50C after 20 minutes or so of run time. So again, the question is how hard do you have to drive a Luxeon K2 to get 200 lumens, will this shorten the life time?

The luxeon K2 is indeed a very durable LED. It is very resistant to damage from heat.

When moving, the heat sink should be enough surface area to keep the LED at a lower temperature.

K2 with TFFC (PWC4-220) giving out minimum of 220Lm at 1.0 Amp. Usually manufacturers like Niterider using highest or custom bin we may not know about.
