Well yes, he is wary. He's known me for 22 years so he knows that even though there's alot of grey hair now, there's still some red in there too. He refers to the redhead in me as my scorched-earth policy.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Ok... let's talk about that then. If this is the perception, then it needs to be addressed. I will admit that it is sometimes difficult for me to let a thread go. I DO get sick of the crap and childishness that I sometimes read. But that is not up to me to determine so I let them go. I try very hard to keep the policy of not closing threads unless it is requested by several in the thread itself or unless it is decided "behind the scenes" that there is an inevitable train wreck about to happen. We DO discuss these things before we take action... really, we do!

Bottom line is this... Darell was right. There are no correct answers and we weren't learning anything anymore. Things were getting heated. Someone had to make the call. Someone with authority from the boss did.

We administrators and moderators are not here to make your lives a living hell and to **** you off on a daily basis. We're here to keep things running smoothly and to play referee if needed. Coming off as a Mom is just one of those things that is just a habit of mine... sorry, it's in the genes (jeans?

Well now Saaby, I think we should ask everyone if they are satisfied with the answers we've given and if they are ready to move on. This thread is not out of hand or nasty or anything at this point. It's just... well... done! But that's only my opinion. What does everyone else think? Are we done now?

Okay, since you asked...in my opinion, it does seem that some threads get locked down pretty quickly. I would expound further, but it's late, it's Friday and the brain is...fried. If the thread is still open later, I may post more (but don't hold your breath).

I agree and understand that this is a privately owned discussion board, and therefore the owner can make whatever rules he wants. YES, a forum's owner can close any topic he/she wants. HOWEVER, just because one CAN, doesn't always mean one SHOULD!

Free speech laws may not be enforceable on a private forum, but they should certainly be honored and respected. JMHAO (just my humble American opinion)

Whew! Reading this thread, you'd think that what we do (and enjoy!) most is closing threads.

Please... It happens. It always happens for a reason. I may be mistaken, but as far as I can remember, I have yet to close a thread that had no flaming or baiting. You may want to consider that I have actually removed offensive language (after discussing it with the Admin/Mod staff) before closing a thread. What is left and locked may not appear to be so bad...

There is never any action we can take that will make everybody happy. With the Admin/Mod staff, ya pretty much get what you pay for.

Thank you Darell, you have summed up what I wanted to say but couldn't get on "paper"
As one of the mods here I have only closed 3-4 threads and most of them involved name calling or were closed at the request of the topic starter.
 
That brings up a good point Mike. I personally think that a valid reason for closing a thread is at the request of the topic starter - especially if the thread is on the verge of ugly anyway. If any of the participants in the thread wish to restart their own thread to continue the discussion, then I'm all for it. Sometimes a fresh start can fix some of the problems.
 
I also agree with B@rt..

I believe that CPF is a very well run board, with extremely 'moderate' moderators and admins. Personally, I have yet to see any action by a moderator which I didn't think was warranted.

But CPF membership has increased a lot, and will continue to do so, probably resulting in more and more situations requiring admin/mod intervention(although I wish it could be otherwise).
You can't please all the people all the time. But I think the admins and moderators here do a fantastic job. Onya guys/girls!

For all the pros and cons of total, uncensored, unmoderated free speech, Usenet is the place to be - especially if you want to flame and be flamed (by professionals!)

On a slightly lighter note, has everyone seen the Flame Warriors page? Pretty funny..
