Hi,

I'm new to modding and hoping for some advice. Which one would throw a single Osram 27W further? Aspheric (52 mm, probably from Kai) or Reflector (stock or other type)?

M@g 2D, 7.2V Eneloop, MaxFlex2, 17.4-24.5V, 700mA

Many thanks :)

Kurni ... a multi die Led like the Ostar will not throw any further with an aspheric lens, than a single die Led. When the image of the die is brought to focus, giving the brightest illumination, you just get an image of the array of dies. So the light just illuminates a larger area but is no brighter.

A reflector, or an optic which 'mixes' the light from the individual dies, makes best use of multi die Leds.

But it still gets more light downrange than a single die, and that's a good thing, even if the light only goes exactly as far.

Could You plese give me the link where You got the Ostar?

Did You have a real brightness choice there?
Because the "normal" shop offers only to have that led, not what bin in reality (runs from 500 to 1000 lumes, a bit of a difference).

PS: I am searching for the 4-die version

The ones listed E2... are the 4 die versions, E3... is the 6. Not all of them seem to be available though. It also has links to the tech sheets.

And no, you can't by ostars by individual bin, only bin group which vary a huge amount.

Thanks for the input guys; I'm trying not to rush this one. I'm waiting for H22A to come up with a heatsink; he's still prototyping. I'm also waiting for Kai's 52mm; he said that it should be for sale by the end of the month. I'll post good / bad result here.

Yellow, I bought it from Mac here; I don't know how he got QY bin.

a single Cree Q5 behind a 55mm aspheric throws farther than the ostar using the same lens...but the ostar throws wider

Awesome pics; you can actually see the 6 Ostar dies :lolsign:

Any explanation why Q5 gives sharper square than Ostar? Is it only a matter of adjusting the distance of the lens by rotating M@g head?

Many thanks,

Kurni,

The Ostar lens has a bit of a texture to it, smoothing out the edges of the die squares - it's not optically clear like the Cree XR-Es.

Nice pictures cytoe. :) I do hope that your neighbors were out of town! I've got a project in the works and your shots have put a smile on my face.

You cannot run an Ostar fron 7.2v using the MaxFlex unless maybe at the 350ma current table. Even at 11v it pulls 2+ amps at the 1000ma table.
