Hello,

I have 2 Alkaline D size batteries which expired on Jan 2004, and manufactured in year 2000.
My DMM reads 1.53V OC, and they still power brightly a 2D incandescent flashlight. They are of Varta brand, 0% mercury, Made in Germany, before they moved their manufacture overseas.
The reason of my wonder is the fact that they haven't leaked in ten years. I have much newer alkaline batteries which already leaked, even new in their package.

Here you go,

.

Does anybody have an idea on why they are overachieving?

Maybe they putted some Mercury and they don't tell it?

Regards to all!

Varta didn't move their manufacturing overseas. They still produce AAA through D cells in Germany. They were purchased by Rayovac, but production facilities still exist in both the US and Germany.
