I have a survivor model w/ low/hi/strobe.
I have the other one with the 7 level settings.
Now I see the workman model, I see it has auto turn off, is it a hi beam only? Also my selector model has a wider beam than the survivor, is this due to different lens or body design?

The Workman is what used to be called the OneShot (or was it SureShot?). It's got only the high beam, and constant soft glow/off function. After 30 minutes it turns itself off to the soft glow mode.

The wider beam is due to the 5mm LED as opposed to the flat (3mm??) in the Survival. I'm not sure which LED is in the Workman as standard, but the 5mm can be put in any of them (standard in the Selector) if you just ask. I would highly recommend the 5mm. Just ask for it. They are a very accommodating group of folks at PALights. Reminds me of Peter & the ARC team. TX

Try prying out the lens with a small screwdriver and reversing it. On a some of the models this will produce a more narrow and even beam shape.

I've tried it but like the factory setup for the survivor, the beam on the selector is alot bigger spot as is. The guy I got the selector from called it by another name, didn't they rename it the selector recently?

BTW I'm not that impressed with the 7 step up function. The increments that it increases in brightness seem noticeable only up to step 4 or 5. After that the brightness is not noticeable to me at all. Also seems that it depends on what I use to reference the increments as to how noticeable they are. If I hold the light close to a surface and run through the increments I can count them as they step up, but even then the # 5-6-and-7 are just tiny tiny jumps in brightness. when shining it across a room it seems that the step ups stop after 4.I usually use this light in my room navigating in the dark when its really late. Usually just use the first step. I like it for its one press to turn off as opposed to the survivor's press twice to avoid strobing, which I have forgotten at times [sometimes startling me until I got used to it].

If anything I've learned here in this forum, its another reason to get the workman (one of each!). I finally broke down and got an Arc AAA due to peer pressure here but the one axiom I have truly abided by from the CPF is "Get One of Each".

Webley,
I agree on the 7 light levels not being that usefull. I do like having a 1 button shut off. The reason I prefer the Survival over the Workman is the Hi/LO settings (most of the time when my eyes are dark adjusted, Lo is plenty bright) is being able to run it on low for times when you need extened run time. I also like the flash mode, as it draws very little power & is great for finding my car in a non-lit parking lot. TX

txwest,
yes I agree with you

especially the one push "off". For me I'm starting to prefer the wider spot of the selector and I can use the low setting too. BTW one problem I DO have with the Pals. When first turning out the room lights the constant on seems dim, but as your eyes adjust it becomes a beacon. I like it to be dark when I'm nodding off.

webbley,
I don't what to tell you there. I usually sleep with my eyes shut, so it makes it dark inside. I've heard of people that sleep with their eyes open, but that isn't one of my many problems. TX

LOL, too many years of working night shifts and having to crash during the daytime. Built an afinity to sleeping in total darkness. Plus when I wake up it allows me that extra 5 seconds of confusion before realizing that Brittany Spears isn't actually in the room with me.
