Panasonic 3100 mAh 18650

The previous version, the NCR18650, is rated at 2900mAh (6.5% less than the 3100mAh) and there is only one person (CPF: jtsgalaxy) selling them on eBay. I don't particularly like unprotected 18650 cells though.

I do like the button top though. The cell measures 18.6mm dia x 65.2mm long according to Panasonic. Dimensions are the same for the NCR18650 and the NCR18650A.

The AW protected 18650 2600mAh measures 18.52mm dia x 68.16mm long but has no button top. The AW protected 18650 2200mAh measures 18.30mm dia x 67.6mm long and has a button top.

I wonder how long before we see an AW protected 18650 3100mAh? How thick is the protection circuit and how tall would the cell be with a button?

Normaly, the protection PCB is about 2-2.5mm thick, I think it need at least 4-4.5mm if add a button top and install a steel plate at the back of the PCB to protect the wear caused by the spring.

I was thinking try to attach a protection PCB to the NCR18650's at first but it was too long to fit into most flash lights, also most high quality lights usually come with regulated drivers that will indicate low voltage and cut itself off if discharged too deep. But I still highly recommend using high quality charger and never leave the cell unattended during charge whatever the cell is either protected or unprotected.

For your information, the actual measured dia of NCR18650 is about 18mm-18.1mm only and has about 0.1-0.2 mm button top.

How soon before you have access to the 3.1 cells, JTS?

I have no idea yet. I think at least 6 months later. My supplier just run out of the stock of NCR18650 again and has increased the price on the newly placed order (usually takes 2-3 months to arrive) so I don't think the 3.1 cell will available shortly. Also I would expect the new 3.1 cell will cost higher than the 2.9, if that's the case I may not have much interest to get them forsale.

An update? Are NCR18650A cells available?

I had good luck with the 2900 mAh version, I mainly use unprotected cells but in 1x18650 configuration.
