Pelican\'s new lens style - cool or not?

Anyone use this? Pelican's new Recoil LED Technology™ works like a lighthouse - it focuses the light by firing backwards. 100% of the light is captured and reflected forward. The result: A super bright white collimated beam that cuts through the thickest smoke, fog and dust. Plus our exclusive voltage regulated LEDs maintain peak brightness longer. link

I'll say that it's cool.

but it's just like the LightWave Infiniton...
...I kinda want to see it done with a Lux V.

I dig the narrowly focused flavors.

heat ... heat is the problem with igh power applications of this technique.

Here's the runtime plot on the 2020 Sabrelite Led that I did back in the spring.

Re: Pelican\'s new lens style - cool or not?

I have both the 2020 Sabrelite and the 8020 M8 LED flashlights. Both produce a bright, square/rectangular beam with virtually no side spill.

Somewhere, I know I have a photograph showing both of their beams from ~5 feet...let's see if I can dig that up...BRB...

What is the differance between the 2020 and the 8020?

The only thing I can realistically do is refer you to my web pages about both of them.
The 2020 is right here and the 8020 is right here if you're interested.
Both flashlights use three C cells, but they're quite different in physical parameters.

Re: Pelican\'s new lens style - cool or not?

That kind of focused beam seems like it would be unsuitable for anything but long range spotting. I wonder if any kind of focusing could be achieved by moving the reflector up and down.

Re: Pelican\'s new lens style - cool or not?

I don't believe the reflector or any of the other items in the bezel are easily accessible; but since both of my flashlights are packed up for moving this weekend, I can't examine them more closely to verify this.

Re: Pelican\'s new lens style - cool or not?

These lights are designed for areas with a lot of dust, silt or smoke. The Sabrelight is designed for underwater use where silt can cause a lot of galre from the back-scatter.

I used my 2020 outside and found it was about the same as one of my 3 watt mods, but the area it lights is more concentrated.

The total lack of spill is kind of cool.
