Well, I may have found my AA light! I got mine from Battery Junction for $44.95. Photon is having a sale, but BJ price is even better and their delivery is MUCH better.

The light arrived and I thought I'd have to feed it, but it came on right out of the box. Great - a no-name Chinese AA ripoff, right? Nope. It was stocked with an Energizer lithium AA! Can't argue with that!

The light isn't tiny at nearly 4 inches long, with a 3/4" head diameter. But wow does that 6 white LED array put out the light! It easily lights a room. Heck, it lights a room from the end of the hallway! Photon says its 1.4W. From a 5mm LED array? Ouch! 230mW each! Probably not for long either on a AA. But that's OK because the output is TOO high for many things, and reducing it will give much better life. Brightness control is simple PWM, and yeah you can see the flicker when you wave the light around. I'm going to have to rig up a detector and connect it to my oscilloscope to see how fast it's going and the duty cycles.

Oh yeah, the head glows in the dark by the emitters. Cool!

The control is great. Click/release the body mounted button and it comes on full. Click and hold and it ramps down. A quick blink at the end of the ramp tells you that's as far as it goes. Click again and it goes off.

Click/hold and the central red LED comes on dim. Click and hold again and it ramps UP. Click and it's off.

The whole thing reminds me of my old Lion Heart.

There are a whole mess of blinky modes available that, frankly, I couldn't care less about. So I am not going to get into them.

The finish is shiny black with concentric rings machined for grip. Not bad, but I would have preferred knurling. There is a very good pocket clip in stainless steel, which is detachable for keyring use. It comes with the keyring and clip installed. I removed the keyring, since for me this is a pocket light. That was a pain in the butt, because the ring which links the light to the chain is like 1/8" diameter. I have very good fine point needlenose pliers. Fingernails won't cut it. At least mine won't.

The light seems extremely well made, like all LRI/photon products. I have no doubt this one will live for quite a while.

Now I can't wait for the Cree version!

Congrats on your new Proton. I've been enjoying mine for a few months now. It does seem to go through a battery pretty quick on high, and get fairly warm, but I've not really timed it. The new Proton sounds interesting.

I would expect it to! If 1.4W is factual, it's way more than a single AA can be asked to do for any length of time.

I like my proton too. Best UI ever. I just hope they don't screw it up on the Cree version. :tinfoil: I've had dirty thoughts about trying to replace the CS emitters in my proton with new DS emitters, but I won't risk my proton till the Pro gets into my hands.

I'm happy to see this thread. For the longest time, I thought I was the only one that really liked the Proton. Glad to see that others are appreciating the light as well. I really hope the Proton Pro becomes a reality.

I think it will be hard not to want to buy the new Pro when it comes out. The light seems well made and small for a light with a side switch. I like the fact that the switch is located on the side and think it will be more easy and enjoyable to use this way. I know some have complained about it accidently being turned on while in the pocket though. The Proton is unique amoung AA lights in its design.

It's supposed to be just like the Proton, with same UI, RED low power and white high power. What changes is the 6xNichia go to 1xCree.

Here's a write-up from an old report, however I don't know if LRI deviated from any of this.

I just received the updated Cree PRO version today! Here are some quick observations:

1) Its a Cree!:eek:oo:
2) The output and throw blows away the original version.
3) Reflector + a real lens to seal the head (no exposed LEDs).
4) Still has the red LED. It is offset from the main LED in the reflector. Red brightness is about the same as the original Proton. There is some distortion of the white beam due to the presence of the red LED, but it is not very noticable.
5) Identical UI
6) New PRO is about 5mm longer
7) No more yellow-green overdriven Nichia led side spill, just pure white Cree light.

Plus this light still can be dimmed down to a very low level. Same for the red. This light is going to give some others a good run for the money.

I received my (2) Pro's today. I'll be ordering a couple more before the night is over. This light rocks. I've always been one of Proton lovers to begin with, but the Pro takes it up a notch. Not as floody as the original Proton, but still very useful light. For a very long time I've been looking for a 1xAA light that meets my requirements. I believe I've found it in the Pro. I've done no runtime testing as of yet, but I'm not sure it's even necessary.

So the new Pro uses a reflector and not an optic? Is the lens glass or plastic? Looking forward to some runtimes and photos. Thanks.

Uses a smooth, non-textured reflector. In earlier photos, it was shown using a optics of some sort. I'm quite pleased with the result. I can not say enough about this light after having it for an hour or so.

The PRO uses a reflector, no optic. The lens looks like glass, or very heavy duty plastic. I can't quite tell, and haven't taken the light apart. In any case the lens is good quality. It looks like Photon got it right.
