Excuse the ignorance, but I have seen references to Luxeon III in many posts. You guys throw it around like its "bacon." I have no idea what makes this LED "better" other than what I read at their website (65 lu@ 700mA & 75% efficiency? and 80 lu @1000mA and 50% efficiency).

Any info for a Fashaloic in training?

I think Luxeon III balancing the brightness and life, which is far brighter than 1W and life much longer than 5W, also the price seems to be reasonable.

Try doing a search. There actually has been some controversy as to what the differenences are between the 1 watt and 3 watt luxeon stars.

From what I have heard, the luxeon III is the same as the 1 watt, untill you reach the 750mA range. Between 750mA and 1,000mA is when you notice a significant difference in light output between the 1 watt and the 3 watt. Link.

I own a Arc LSHF-NAT-P (1W) and it puts out one beautiful snow white beam. It goes with me everywhere. I did however, buy (from The Sandwich Shoppe) a MadMax drop-in module for the Mini-Maglite with a LS3 S bin emitter:

... I think this is one of the biggest miss-conceptions. The Lux-III is not a 3-watt LED. It's a 1-watt Luxeon, version III. At least this is the way I understand it.

I think in retrospect, they should have named the Luxeons:

Luxeon 1 (one die) (the "1 Watt" LED)
Luxeon 4 (four die) (the "5 Watt" LED
Luxeon 1+ (one die with greater current and output capability) (The Luxeon III)

None of these should be identified by a power level since the power will vary considerably due to Vf as well as chosen drive level.

EDIT: I have had confirmation from a very reliable source that there is a physical difference between the Luxeon 1 and III. As to what that difference is, it seems Lumileds is keeping that to themselves.....

Okay, what practical differences did you see in your L6 when you switched to a Luxeon III? Didn't you fry the LED in your L6? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

While we're on the subject, what is the L6 LED? Naikaimachi?

Lithead-

Have you checked the FAQ at the middle top of the forums here? Maybe that will help out a bit?

Lithead,

The L6 comes with Luxeon 5W LED. I inadvertantly fried the circuit (driver) of a L6 by accidentally shorting the input leads while the circuit was powered up. The fried circuit resulted in the LED being in direct drive from what I could tell. Since I needed to do something with the mess, I decided to install a new driver and whille at it, replaced the 5W with a Luxeon III. The Luxeon III doesn't have the luminous output of a 5W but in any given reflector or optic, the light that is produced will be focused in a tighter beam angle and allow for a greater effective range of the beam.

Typically, the Lux III will give longer run at a lower flux with a narrower and higher concentration (lux) compared to a Luxeon 5W. The preference of one over the other is dictated by the desired goals and required function of the beam.

Double A: The only thing I saw in the FAQs deal with how to use the forum, is there a separate FAQ for lights? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Don,

Thanks for the explanation. It makes more sense now.

Has anyone ever compared the 1-watt (e.g. R2K) and 3-watt (e.g. TV0K) Luxeons @700mA?
