Hi Folks,

Pursuant to my previous post regarding which lights to purchase while in the sandbox, I proceeded by ordering a few Jetbeam lights from BOG based on your feedback and had them shipped to me to the sandbox.

The Jet-III ST BVC (R2) I received turned out to be the same user interface as the Jet-III M models I also ordered, though BOG mentioned it would be the reverse clicky Three mode light, though the forward clicky two mode is fine.

However, the Jet-III ST BVC with the R2 emitter has the worse tint I’ve seen to date. I had asked BOG to please test the units prior to shipping to me halfway across the world and am at a loss since this unit has a very green tint with a very noticeable dark spot in the center of the hotspot which gets worse with distance (15m+) attempting to illuminate objects.

Contacted BOG and was told that the Jet-III ST BVC has been discontinued and that BOG is now out of them, hence I would not be able to replace it, and the shipping costs alone are getting too ridicules.

My question is if it would be possible to perhaps replace the R2 with a Q3-5A with the help of the CPF house mod-ers once I get back home to the US, where I’ll be happy to pay for the work performed.

Your thoughts and suggestions are as always welcomed and much appreciated.

Yes, it can be done! I've done it several times.

The slightly darker center will persist, but the tint will be better.

I have one and it's somewhat green too. Actually, it's such a cool color of green on minimum output, that I like keeping it around. :sssh:

EngrPaul,

You sir, are the man!
May I impose on you upon my return by sending you an IM regarding this request?
I should be back home around March/April 2010...

I don't have any of these emitters now. I might be doing warm XP-G's around that time

You might want to PM me about it then. :D They will probabably give a smooth hotspot!

Roger that!
Thank you much, and will contact you once I get back home...

I wonder why BOG would tell you that the JET-llll Pro ST BVC was discontinued and out of stock? I just went there and took a screen shot, and it says otherwise. I also went to two other stores that sell them, and they both have them in stock. I have heard no mention that the JET-lll is discontinued...Seems like our men in uniform should be treated a little better than that.

forget waiting 5 months.

try carefully taking the front of the thing apart

if you can figure out a way to move the emitter back from the reflector (aluminum foil/washer?)1 or 2 mm, the beam will improve significantly.

or if it doesnt, grind and sand the rear of the reflector 1 or 2 mm, so the emitter can sit more forward, and that should do it

bondr006,

Your guess is as good as mine.
That's what I was told via email by BOG.

Thank you for the help kind sir...

You are welcome. My JET-lll Pro ST BVC is a 3 level light with a reverse clicky. It has the IBS user interface that allows me to set any one of the three levels at whatever output I want, in any order I want. I don't understand why you were sent something different. Below are a few pictures of my JET-ll Pro ST BVC. Does yours look the same?

bondr006,

Indeed it does, however mine says R2 on the head as well as Hi____Lo on the top of the battery tube near the head.
Mine does not tail stand either.
Is yours Q5, and where did you buy the three mode version if I may ask?
Thank you kindly for the great pics...

Mine is a Q5, but it should be exactly the same as the R2 version. At least the place where I buy mine makes no distinction between the two, except for the emitter of course. I bought mine here....the only place I purchased all six of my JETBeams. You can also get a 12% discount there by using the CPF discount code CPFSAVE12 at checkout. Below is a picture of my whole JETBeam family. I hope to add the M1X and JET-lll M soon also.

bondr006,

That is an outstanding collection!
Thank you sir for the input on where I may order the ST three mode BVC from, as I intend to do so shortly.
I held out on the M1X since there apparently is a version 4 coming out soon, which I’d like to procure as well, and will be doing so from your suggested vendor.
Signing off now. Thank you once again and God speed…

EngrPaul (or anyone who's changed emitter)>>>Info for emitter change: after taking out reflector there is a white ring with no visible markings anywhere. How does the white ring come out?

AH-1W, that doesn't sound right at all. Should also come with spare tailcaps to change forward / reverse clicky. IBS should be 3 mode, and IMHO it is the best operating system. And a dark spot, that is totally uncalled for - if dealer is incompetent and unable to deliver an acceptable product, contact manufacturer? Jetbeam should be a bulletproof peice of quality gear - I think you made a great choice and want to see it work out for you.
Until then, shim reflector out: put a small (2mmx4mm)stip of electrical tape on bottom of emitter, and another on opposite side. Build up a few layers, 5 may do it. This is a 1 minute modification.

That white thing is a soft poker chip with hole in the middle. Sometimes you can work them out by pushing downward on the edge around it's perimeter, the other end will lift up. If not, you can use a hot exacto knife to cut a the poker chip radially from with one slit from the emitter (careful) to the outer edge. I will still function just fine on re-install. I have an exacto knife attachment for my soldering iron, works great at this.

Mine was from BOG and has two modes like the Jet-III-Mil. I didn't realize Jetbeam has a 3 mode ST that works from 2 CR123 cells! bondr006, Is that a forward clicky or reverse clicky?

This issue has come up in the past, and while I'm not the definitive expert on the subject, I believe what happened is that Jetbeam released what amounts to a "special edition" Jet-III ST with an R2 emitter and the military interface. It's not officially a special edition, but either they didn't sell well, or they ran out of R2 emitters, and Jetbeam ended up switching back to Q5 emitters and the three-mode IBS, which is all that is currently available new from a dealer. So, BOG probably is out of the Jet-III ST you ended up with, even if he has other Jet-III STs in stock. This is what happens when the manufacturer changes a product and doesn't change the name at the same time... :scowl:

The R2/military UI lights actually seem to be somewhat in demand. I've tried to snag a couple on Ebay, and they have both ended up selling for more than the cost of a new Jet-III ST from a dealer (which is where I draw the line).

The Jet-III ST + XP-G would probably be a killer combo.

Linger,

Thank you kindly for the mod suggestion.
I will attempt it as a temp solution and see how it turns out.

Grunscga,

Thank you for the information.
Note that I contacted BOG with a request to additionally purchase the ST BVC three mode reverse clicky since I had decided to just keep the current two mode unit, and I then was informed that the ST had been discontinued and none are in stock.

EngrPaul,

Please see "bondr006" post number nine where the gent writes that: "My JET-lll Pro ST BVC is a 3 level light with a reverse clicky."

Hope this helps...

Hi Paul,

Coincidence is that I was not aware of an JET-lll Pro ST model that had a different UI than the 3 level IBS UI. Mine did come stock with an reverse clicky. but I like a forward clicky better, as that is what I am used to. The dealer that I purchased mine from aquired a forward clicky assembly for me, and I changed it. I actually like the IBS UI better with a forward clicky...as I mentioned in this post.

Regards,

Rob Bond
