Question on the Modular inside the PR Head. Can it be pulled out? How exactly do I do this? Could it then be inserted into a Firefly?

Brian

There is no "module" in a PR head.

It uses a e-can to hold the converter board. That is epoxied in place under the "shelf" that is built into the PR head.

The led is then epoxied to the top of that "shelf"

Therefor, you cannot remove them later..... not easily anyway. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif

Nope, in a PR head, the convertor board is potted in the eCan, and the LED and convertor are mounted separately.

For a convertor to work in a Firefly, the convertor must be built into a sandwich. In either scenario, after the LED/board are mounted, it is a PITA to undo the work (and probably not recommended).

Oops, looks like Ticey beat me to the explanation.

We need to lobby McGizmo to make a PR head that will take a std sammie.

modular is the wave of the future!

I, too, am all for modular. Many of my light accomodate the ecan/esink "module." Although this setup is great for flexibility purposes and it does get the heat out, it doesn't do it as well as the PR setup does. In the PR, the emitter is epoxied directly to the bulk head, and this results in a direct path for heat to escape.

I like modularity as well. I think the PM6 program has shown the value and merits of such an approach. One solution that I have had in mind would require starting from scratch with components, including a different converter board layout. The project would be a bit too ambitious at the moment, all things considered. There are many solutions. Some lend themselves to existing architecture and components and others would require their own unique platforms. A good modular approach will NOT compromise thermal considerations among others, IMHO.

Here's an idea you might wan't to try.

When I do my PR builds I only pot the eCan in two places instead of all the way around. It still holds the eCan in place very securely.

Whenever I want to swap out the convertor board in one of my PR heads, I first place a vacuum cap over the luxeon (so you don't hit it with a hot iron), simply unsolder the leads from the emitter board, grab a flat head screwdriver and give it a light pry between the eCan & the threads. The eCan easily breaks free with no damage done. Of course the eCan modules can only be swapped into another PR head since the boards are potted (duh /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinser2.gif).

Here's a head that had a BB500, then BB611, and now a BB667 (rev.4).

Good deal. Thanks for the info.

Not what I wanted to hear. BUT! It's all good.

(I'm glad this turned into something informative as well. Please continue.)
