It's a AAA aluminum flashlight that has a red laser in the center, UV LEDs surrounding it, and regular white LEDS surrounding those. The light is supposed to switch between the three with a single button on the side of the light.

PROBLEM: The light works when I screw in the tail partially, but I have to hold it just so. If I screw it in all the way, nothing works.

Three AAA batteries fit inside of a cartridge that's inserted into the battery tube. The + side is down with a spring - connector/retainer at the top.

QUESTION: What is likely to be causing the connection problems resulting in the light's not working and how could I fix it?

Thanks!

Sounds like a bad connection between the battery holder and the tail cap. You might put a wad of aluminum foil in there and see if it works better. Also be sure the threads in the tail cap and on the body are really clean. Good luck.
