I got my first metal lathe for Xmas and have been turning, facing, parting, and threading like a mad man, lots of mistakes but I still have all of my fingers. I was so proud of my first washer, I framed it :)

This last week I spent a few hours and finally built something useful!

Below are the pieces and parts (The US $Quarter is just for size reference)

the front of the light is threaded at 36TPI... just because I could ;-)

The back of the lighthead is threaded at 18TPI to match my cable gland.
I ended up using a larger CG then I liked but it allowed me to have room for the driver and internal threading.

I bored a flat bottom hole that's 22mm in diameter and 12mm deep,
then at 5.5mm depth I widened the bore to 25mm creating a ledge for the lense to rest on an oring.
The wall seperating the front and rear bore holes is around 10mm thick.
The housing is a total of 32mm in diameter x 36mm length (excluding the Cablegland)

This is the head put together.
The used a bead of clear RTV silicone sealant to seal the lense and the CableGland.
The yellow tape is "Might Fix" silicone wrap which is serving two functions:
* thickening the cable so the CG grips better
* Acting as reinforcement / strain relief

As a quick test I dropped the head into a fish tank for 4 hours without a hickup...
beam angle is 70 degrees (This is without any optics, only a 5mm WINDOW is being used for this round. When Ledil final releases the IRIS optics for the XM-L I'll worry more about the effiecency of the beam, for now... it's bright!)

For those wondering,
  • Battery pack is 4 x 18650s in parallel
  • Driver = LFlex from taskled
  • Switch = Hallsw from taskled
  • Canister will be the OMS canister
WRT to the effectiveness of the heatsink...
  • out of the tank it hit thermal shutdown in about 30 seconds
  • in the tank it ran for 3 hours before I turned it off and went to bed

Next skills to learn: Anodizing and Milling (Just got the milling attachment for my lathe!)


Changes to consider for future builds:
  • Instead of a single piece of aluminum, use a core/shell approach as it will make wiring easier.
  • Needs optics!!!
  • Black silicone wrap please!
  • a 40mm diameter would be acceptable if I used a 3up LED configuration... Cutter Electornics has the XM-L versions.
  • Start thinking non-cabled designs with only 2 x 18650s

I've been turning wood for a long time... can't say it prepped me much for this little beastie though!

Been making my own tools from HSS blanks... think I'll end that spend some cash on indexable ones just to save time, now if I could just find were the wife hid the check book!

What temperature did you program the cut-off on the Flex?


Just had it at whatever the default was to begin with....

I had set the flex to power hi on startup, this morning I tried using a magnet to start program it and I flub something in the wiring putting it together and the hallsw wasn't functioning.

So like an idiot I took it apart to find the issue, and well twisted some wires in the Cablegland ripping a couple solder points... no biggy just time.

looks like I fired the flex with some bad grounds and looks I'll be sending another pay pal to George!


Worse, I stripped the internal threads for the cable gland putting it back together and there's no way to trust this hatchet job of a seal. the 18TPI was close approx, not exact threading, as I used 60degree rather than 80degree grooves since I didn't have the right tool. The exposed threads on the gland just aren't long enough to secure it well.

Wish I could have dove it this weekend, but oh well... it was only a POC!


Next one will be a bit longer and bigger in diameter, using a core insert I can avoid the wiring nightmare all with a smaller diameter CG on the back side negating the need for the tape.

any suggestions for a argo CG that works well with 6 mill cable?

It's going into my standard kit, right next to the duck tape!!!!!!!


I managed to secure the gland with touch of epoxy, then wrapped it to the botton 5mm of the head. 24 cure time and this time will be usable at least for a test dive!

I too would be happy to own a small lathe, but im a tekkie, not a mechanics guy.

In the past i used 1/2 cable gland, but to avoid yours troubles, i got provisions of 3/8 glands, they are nice to have

Just a thought...

I tried programing the H6Flex using a magnet and HallSW switch but found it tedious and mistake-prone. I ended up using a temporary surface-mount momentary switch instead. It takes a few minutes of presses and clicks to work through the options, but once programmed you can swap back to the Hall.
 
Nice job Codiak! I don't have a lathe or the skills to use one but I love to look at dive light projects.

I would like to see pics of the future non-cannister build that you mentioned as well :)
 
I tied off the light on a safty bar an hour before we began our dive.
Checked it on the way out it was burning bright.... after 1.5 hours returned and it was dimmer but still going... too bad it dimmed do to flooding ;

the tape didn't hold I suspect the cold water did it in... Oh well.. prototypes....
