So I received my Quark AA2 R5 from 7777's about 3 weeks ago. This has virtually replaced every light I own other than my spot lights. I love this light for me it sets the bar. I also just received my Eneloops. After loading it I pulled the trigger on maximum and decided to do a runtime test. After only 15 min the light was very warm to the. Point that it would become very comforting on a cold night. Is this normal? I'm going to use a laser thermometer on it when I get home to see how hot its actually getting. Do I need to be concerned about overheating the eneloops? What about the light itself?:confused:

Thats normal. It means the heatsink is doing its job. Your Eneloops should be fine too.

When held in the hand, or with air moving over the light, it won't heat up so much. Technically, if a light gets very hot it means heats-inking is not working, because the heat is not being dispersed across the light body. However any high-powered LED will get hot when run on max so no worries.

Also, this is the incandescent forum - just for future reference make sure to post in the correct place.

Oh no I thought I was in LED can I move it or does a moder have to?

Re: Quark AA2 R5 Hand warmer

I'm doing the runtime test on my new 123-2 R5 right now, with a pair of lithium ion RCR123's, it's starting to get a little warm but not too bad, its been on for about 15 or so also.

P.S. They are actually IR temperature guns, the laser on some is just for guidance. Ill get it out when I hit around the 25 minute mark

EDIT:

Well it seemed to only get up to around 113F at the side of the head, 99-100F at the center/lower part of the battery tube, nothing for me to worry about

The Quark is my first high powered quality light. I'm not really sure what temps are normal.

Re: Quark AA2 R5 Hand warmer

before i purchased my quark 123-2 R5, i had read about the fenix pd30 heating problems and was not recommended that it was used for long periods of time on max. the pd30 would get very warm after only a few minutes on max.

so i emailed 4sevens if it would be OK to run their quarks on max for long periods of time, and they wrote back saying its good for 1.8 hours :D

ive used my quark at work for 20-30 minutes at a time on max, its never gotten "hot". very warm is a better description. but also my hand helps dissipates the heat. and the light performs as well as the day i got it.

i dont think you should worry, because if something does happen 4sevens has a 10year warranty, have good customer service, and are based here in the states, so it shouldnt take months to resolve an issue.

Re: Quark AA2 R5 Hand warmer

That's great news I just went for a walk its 37 F out right now ran her on max the whole walk and barely got warm I was almost hoping for the heat I felt earlier since my hoody alone wasn't keeping me super warm. I almost couldn't imagine going without my quark for a couple weeks for a repair though.

That's about how I would describe my experience too. No problems with it doing that.

If you do end up preferring something that doesn't get so warm, I can recommend a Quark Turbo as my ones do not seem to get much past "barely warm" despite intensive use.

2 months on March 5th..... 4 month old quark, good up front CS(told me "straight up" that it would be a couple months. ummm they told me it was being sent back to the factory, which I assume is in China.

lol.... you'd hate to be me right now.

if you can still touch it for 10 seconds its still ok IMO. My LF5XT w/ Li Ion got untouchable within 10 min., almost unbearable.

The fact that the body of the lamp is getting warm means that the heat is properly transferred from the LED to elsewhere to protect the LED from overheating. So basically this is a good thing.

Same thing with CPU's. If you have a CPU which produces 80W of heat and the heat sink is not properly installed, the heat sink will be cold and the CPU will definitely overheat and shut down. If the sink is hot, it works properly.

Same here...the Quark does everything I need so my other lights are just sitting idle.

As others have suggested, don't worry about the heat, it's normal and it should be warm on Max output as the heat is being sinked away from the LED to the aluminum housing, which is good. I did a runtime test on my Quark AAx2 R5 when it was new on Max with fresh Duraloops as a "burn-in" test to make sure it was reliable at full output for an extended period of time, and to confirm runtimes with the rechargeables. Times were as expected and I really like the way the light drops brightness levels as the cells become depleted. The light level was constant until the cells reached about the 1.0v level each (~2.0v to head) and then dropped from 206 to 109 lumens. After a short while, the light dropped to 85 lumens and the cells showed ~0.85v each at which point I stopped the test and replaced the cells. After a brief rest, the cells idle voltage was 0.9v each which is perfect for full discharge, so I know I can use the light at full power and not hurt the Duraloops by overdischarging them or causing reverse polarity when running 2 cells. Excellent design.

And 4Sevens has confirmed that running the Quarks at full output for extended periods is not an issue as the LED is well sinked.
:twothumbs
