Probably a good time for an update here on the Copper Pill mod:
1) Brightness is more a function of the Luxeon used than of the circuitry pushing it. There, I've said it; all the design work in the world won't really change that too much.
2) The first ones I'm building have some very bright Luxeons I stumbled upon. Future ones will use what ever Luxeons I get in shipment. (I have a 5W E2e design I'd like to try also).
3) Pricing, hmm, after some of antics I've had to go through building these, maybe a million bucks each? Just kidding, but would expect prices to be in the 35 - 45 dollar range. Depends on how much I have to pay for Luxeons, and other factors.
Brightness and run times are the same as the Illuminator (same circuit) except adjusted to a CR123 cell. I've not done a run time yet, but expect an hour or so of light from a CR123.
Also, this mod will only be for E1e/E2e, as now that I've had an E1 to look at, it can not be modded this way. The E1 head does not have enough room to accomodate the Luxeon lens. It uses a plastic front window which is snapped in place. When the Luxeon lens is in place, the front window cannot be installed into the head. Sure, it cound be machined to make it fit, but I've not got that many hours to put into it. So, unfortunately, E1/E2s are excluded.
The E1e/E2e have a front bezel ring which unscrews, and a thick Pyrex front window. The extra space from the thick Pyrex allows room for the Luxeon lens in the E1e/E2e head assembly.
That's where the mod is right now.
Mc Gizmo will be getting the first prototype mailed to him Monday, so he can give some feedback next week.
I've spent a lot of time trying to work the design to accomodate the physical variations in demensions so it can be dropped in any light. Don will get one general purpose drop in any light Pill. Hope it fits......
