Questions: Surefire 6Z Upgrade

I own an oldie Surefire 6Z incandescent. I have read elsewhere that a Cree R2 assembly will transform my light into a brighter LED.

I know very little about lights. So I have questions:

  • Are there multiple types of Cree R2 assemblies? Or is there just one?

  • If there are different assemblies with different output ratings or different modes, how do I know what will work with my light and its two CR123 batteries?

  • What's the best place to buy such an assembly?

Yes there are 3-4 basic iterations of LED drop in. The most common are based off the Chinese brass/aluminum reflector module pictured below. Some manufacturers offer variations of this basic design.. BOG I think has a deeper reflector model for tighter throw for example.

Surefire has their P60L, which is a spin off of the P60 incan, and uses a seoul P4 emitter.

Gene Malkoffs designs use a proprietary design with a patented brass heatsink and a 6 degree TIR optic.

Then there are the DIY builders here on CPF.

Best place to buy depends on your budget, how quickly you want to receive the module and what kind of warranty coverage you are willing to pay for. I have bought drop ins from DX and have no regrets. I build my own now using parts from DX, shiningbeam and the CPF marketplace (thanks big-C!!).

Malkoff should be in stock or in stock soon. Just checked his site and only the M60 is out (unless you wanted a warm one)

As for custom drop ins, check out the Custom section and look for Nailbender D26 Drop Ins Thread. All of his drop ins are designed with CR123 in mind.

Cree is a company, and R2 is a flux bin of their Xlamp series of LEDs. I'm guessing you meant P60 type drop-ins.

As kramer5150 linked to, there are quite a few different kinds of P60 type drop-ins.

The drop-in with the right voltage range should work with your light.

Check the Malkoff site often, and a few drop-ins might pop up. Does signing up for his news letter still give you notifications if he has things in stock? If yes, then signing up for a news letter could also work in informing you.

As said before, best place to buy will depend on price, shipping speed, customer service, warrently, and sometimes beam pattern.

That one came with the pictured DX reflector kit. I haven't been able to source them separately, but then I haven't really searched very hard either.

DX5937? I've been cannibalizing kid's toys, useless remote controls, and the like. But it would great to have a ready source where I could just buy a bag of 20 springs for $2.

Yeah that is SKU:5937 in my picture above.

I scrounge through the electronics recycling bins at work to try and find parts:eek:

well to me it SEEMS a bit shorter,,,
ditto on shortening, done that, and it makes the base smaller, cos it is a bit marginal for the usuall board + conatct pad dimensions..

it is a rather strong one, more than any P60 modules...and that may be a good thing for a gun mounted light...

Thanks to all for the replies.

I ordered an Malkoff M60 drop-in for the 6Z.

Looking forward to a 235+ lumen powerhouse!

a small update on the springs....
few days ago i gort the golden one...they are indeed shorter at 1.5 cm...and they are soldered at the swicth tabs..these are the reccomended replacements for a flashlight...

But for a P60 module maybe the otehrs are a better fit....you see both have the same diameter at the base, so the longer ones are more "pointy"/narrower....they are going to be cliped anyway but the used length will have a daim closer to most boards + pad...
