Quiet sound measurement?

Is there a good way to measure the intensity of relatively quiet sounds at home? Using a Radio Shack digital SPL meter didn't work at all--that is designed to measure at volumes loud enough to potentially damage hearing (lowest level is 60 db or so). I'm trying to get a sense of the volume of general background noise around here, which is sometimes distracting, i.e. my neighbor is playing a stereo (not insanely loud, but the bass comes through the building), there's traffic outside, my computer has a fan whirring, a plane is passing overhead, etc. I'm not sure what to do about this, either to measure the noise or to mitigate it (don't suggest earplugs, I can't stand them). Thanks.

Nice, 30db is much lower than the RS meters. Those things look expensive but I'll check into it.

Why not microphone into your computer, manual setting on an audio capture software program.

It's easy on Apple iMac.

And just keep turning up the gain, till you get a benchmark setting.

Obviously, keep mic away from your own noises, computer fan, radio, tummy rumbles etc.
