R.I.P. Robbie Knievel

Robbie Knievel passed away today from pancreatic cancer. He was a Christian, a great daredevil, and son of Evel Knievel. He will be missed.

I was in same room with Evel Knievel at Del Mar Race Track about 20 years ago. Evel was there as grand marshal, and Robbie was his escort. I was there with a half mile flat track racer as a pit crew extra. Mr Knievel was in his last years, guessing 60s, he was in a wheel chair. He could stand, although he moved like every bone in his body was fused together.

The whole family has faith -- RIP

I think God just needed a test subject to test the durability of a glorified body in heaven. Robbie is probably up there pulling off his biggest stunt yet. After jumping the Grand Canyon, I'm sure he's thought up something good.

Pedantic, but Robbie's father was not evil. He was very good, but his nickname was Evel. I saw him on TV as a kid on his attempt to jump a bunch of buses. 13, actually on 6 May 1975 at Wembley. He was seriously injured, and it was really upsetting for me as a 4yo. I got over it, as my attention span was quite short, and, honestly, it hasn't grown much since.

I needed to refresh my memory on the meaning of pedantic. L@@King it up, I didn't find it to mean persistently boring or being a pest.

1. ostentatious in one's learning.
2. Formalism.

All my life I thought it was Evil Knievel. Happy to be corrected.

Robert Knievel got the nickname while in jail for mischief. It stuck.
In the next cell was a guy named Knawful. The jailer called him Awful Knawful. Mr Knawful said "if I'm called Awful Knawful he should be called Evel Knievel". Robert said "sounds good to me". And it stuck.

William taught Robbie how to think through his stunts. In the early days he'd think of a stunt and just wing it. He had no idea how fast to go, what angle to build the ramp, and so on. But Robbie used engineering to plan out his ideas.


Late in life Evel Knievel gave one of his Harleys to BMX stunt pioneer Mat Hoffman. See, Mat had done a famous stunt where he was pulled towards a giant ramp on a 20" wheel BMX bicycle by a motorcycle at 55mph in order to break his own record of a 25' air. He reached 35' that time but the crash afterward was of Evel Knievel lore. He was unconcious for a couple of days.
Mat rode the Harley in a half pipe with Evel Knievel applauding nearby.

I used to wonder why Robbie chose a moto cross bike and not a street bike. His dad's motorcycles were heavy hunks of metal and Robbies lighter, likely with better take off speed.
My nephew used to live in the country and saved up for a dirt bike. A 6 speed. When I asked if he'd ever hit 6th gear he said "you go so fast in 5th gear there's nowhere out here you can hit top end and have enough room to stop without hitting something." He said "that's why Robbie Knievel uses a dirt bike?"

He bought a canyon so he could jump over it? Wow.

He had lucrative contracts for toys, t-shirts, school lunch boxes etc so yeah I guess he could afford to buy a canyon. lol.
