I found these batteries and they are AA size and rated 3.6v, 2200mAh.

Will these harm my Akoray K-106? It is rated .7-4.5v.

Also, will it be significantly better than an Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA?

No, that battery is not suitable for use in flashlights. It is designed for long life low power applications. If used in a high power application like a light it will not perform and your money will be wasted.

EDIT: Mr. Happys got it

What you are looking at is a lithium thionyl chloride memory backup battery designed to be used under very very small current draw, and NOT intended to be used in flashlights. While its nominal voltage is 3.6V, identical with Lithium-ions, it is non-regargeable and will cost you alot of money to have them replaced whenever they are out of juice

It should also be noted that in a CPFer's review of this light, it for some reason drew 3.5 amps on a Li-Ion cell - if you do this for more than a moment, there'll be a lot more harmed than just your flashlight :caution:

My next question is: Why would it run better with a 14500 @ 3.6v but only 900 mAh?

When you look at mAh you are looking at the wrong number. Instead of capacity (mAh) you need to consider current (mA). A battery that can supply 1 mA for 2200 hours has a capacity of 2200 mAh. However, a current of 1 mA might only be fraction of the current needed by a light, which could require a supply current of up to 1000 mA. Your 14500 might be able to supply a current of 900 mA for one hour, giving it a capacity of only 900 mAh, but still able to run the light where the other cell can't.
