re: older GP charger

I have an old GP charger model GPPB02UL. i triple checked the model number, it is correct. This was purchased in Jan 2003 at a high end camera store in Canada for $75. It was marketed at the smart charger. But I don't really know what's going on under the hood. It can charge 1,2,3 or 4 cells at a time.

This charger came with 4 cells of 1600mah. At the time I remember that the highest capacity available for any NIMH cell was 1800mah. (yes I have a good memory.) If you can believe, 3 of the 4 cells actually hold an acceptable capacity today and relatively good self discharge over 8 years, better than some of the other cells I have purchased over time. They have been cycled maybe 100 or so times. THey are currently used in the common household flashlight.

What I want to know is, is it possible that this charger is charging some of the relatively newer 2500mah cells of higher capacity improperly? not to it's full capacity? (I remember on the box, that there was a charging time of X hours for a 1600mah cell, and slightly more for an 1800mah cell). But that was it, no higher capacities existed at the time. I am willing to spend for the powerex c9000 charger, but I don't want to spend money if I don't have to, I am currently happy with my charger. Ignorance is bliss.

I am considering this now because I plan on buying 12 or so eneloops relatively soon, and especially with the new 2500LSD eneloops coming out soon as well, I don't want an under performing charger if that is the case. Is there any reason to be concerned and buy the powerex charger? or is what I got a sufficient performer
