dear guys!
first of all i would like to explain that i'm a total inexperienced guy looking for basic information. I think this is the right place
i'm writing from italy so i hope you could forgive me if i don't write english well!

stright to the question:

i have in mind to build a led light panel using hipower 1watt led from http://www.luxeonstar.com/Luxeon-Rebel-Star-LEDs-s/13.htm

i've read in the led datasheet that it's sold with a 120 degree.
the problem is that i need that with at least 40 degrees until 60 (maximum)!

i've found this lens 40° http://www.khatod.com/cms/pl1265_series___single_mini_lenses_for_philips_lumileds_luxeon_power_leds-876520-876520.html .
could please someone exlplain me if these lens need a difficoult work to put on or it's only to be "plugged"? (very very sorry for my english, hope you understand me)

second question is if these lens modify a lot the "luminosity" of the led, because i will use it to grow some special kind of tomatoes (and i know they need a lot of light to grow indoor).

now that you know my question i ask you also if there are a led more powerfull of luxeon rebel (and witch one) and where can i find good optics.

i'm sorry if these questions are already posted.

any suggestion about my project will be very appreciated!

thanks a lot

The rebel optics you mentioned above look like they should fit the star mounted rebels from luxeonstar.com. I have to ask though why the optics listed on luxeonstar's own website would not work? They have many beam patterns from tight beams to flood.

http://www.luxeonstar.com/Rebel-Star-LED-Optics-s/65.htm

Also as far as using them for grow lights, I do know that there are many threads on this forum discussing which color leds "wavelengths" to use for different plants. I know from reading some of them that tomatoes like different colors than say basil does... You might want to search for some of those threads.. Assuming that these "special tomatoes" are really tomatoes ;)

:nana:
maybe yes maybe not :)

thank you very much for your answer

i've read something about growing in the forums ... but i have some problem to understand english well.
anyway ... my first question is about the lens because i'm not into led and i don't know anything about the lens and the troubles i may found to mount it

... growing plants is another things that i will discover later!!!

i have check the lens on rebelstar and, for example this http://www.luxeonstar.com/Fraen-39-Deg-20mm-Lens-with-Flat-Bottom-Holder-p/flp-w4-re-hrf.htm have to mounted with glue.
The kathod lens maybe have just to be plugged ... this is what i really like to know!

all the best!

The Khatod lens that you showed may plug into the star board but if you invert it it will fall off without some sort of glue to hold it in place. The little pegs align it but still need to be glued to the board or a process called heatstaking.

If you are looking for adhesive backed optics for the rebel try Ledil Optics or even Dialight. I currently use Dialight optics at work and they are easy to handle and work with. You may have to do a slight modification to these optics (cut off the alignment feet and align yourself).

very very helpfull!
one more thing:
if i put a lens of 40° degree on a rebel that mount originally a 120° will i have more lumens?
thanks again

:twothumbs

Optics don't create lumens. If they did I'd be getting paid a lot more to design them. What the optic does is put those useful lumens that emit from the LED into a beam that can be aimed.

It actually increases your Lux measurement. Lux is a measure of how much light over a given area. So a spot optic of about 6degrees FWHM will have a high lux measurement while a 20degree FWHM optic will have a lower lux measurement, but both could be using the same source.

Also, for grow lights you typically need a mix of reds, blues, and in some cases UV's. Are you planning to make a mixed array or are you going to just use white LEDs??

ok understood! thank you for your fast reply!
i am planning to make a mixed colours grow light, but, at the moment i'm just collecting some information about led, about colors, about this world ... to evaluate if the project could be or not a waste of time/money

btw are better more lux then lower lux for plant growing?
