I have a Pila IBC charger that can use a 12v DC car adapter. It seems to me that as long as I connected the positive and negative terminals correctly it should be able to feed directly off the 12v automotive battery without going through the car's accessory outlet. Is there any reason that wouldn't work?

The application would be recharging batteries under emergency conditions. If a disaster hits my area I'll be isolated for some time and a low priority for the electrical company to repair the power lines. However it is likely there will be wrecked or abandoned cars around that still have a charge in their battery. I don't have the adapter yet but as I recall the accessory outlet won't work unless you have the keys in the ignition and while I won't have the keys it is easy to pop the hood and access the battery directly.

No problem what-so-ever - as long as there's no circuitry in the lighter adapter plug that reduces voltage. Plug it in and do a voltage check.
