1) How would you prefer to purchase the light?

A lot of lights like this have more than the 1-2 modes like you asked for. The Thrunite Archer 1A that I like, for example, has 4 modes including a ultra low "moonlight" mode for dark adapted eyes, and it's smaller sibling the Thrunite T10 has 3 modes, also including a moonlight mode. I do think the T10 is a decent option for you, however.

A couple 2-mode, compact lights that I think meets all your needs are the Inova X1 and Pelican 2350. Neither of them are particularly high output, but should be good for tasks around the yard. They're both single AA lights.

If you want ultra-compact, the Lumintop Tool is a well-liked 3-mode light that gets nearly as much output on a AAA battery.

Inova and Pelican also both have more powerful 2 x AA lights: The Inova X2 or Radiant, and the Pelican 2360.

A bit over your price range, but a Zebralight could work if you want to keep the light small (1 inch wide, 3.2 inch long). Their SC5 AA maxes out at over 500 lumens but also has a really low 0.1 lumen mode. Comes with a belt clip too (needs a good rechargeable or lithium AA to get max output, steps down to 300+ after a few minutes).
UI can a bit complicated but easy to get the hang of.

For 2AA lights, there are a lot of options too, Fenix, 4Sevens, Jetbeam to name a few.

I personally like my Zebralights, but it is a bit over your price range.
