Red Filter on fenix T1?

Hello, I'm looking for some advise on a light to use to Varmint hunt after dark. I have been looking at a Fenix T1 since they cam out for a general use light. If the T1 would throw enough light to reflect off a varmints eyes at 100 yards with a red filter, it would work great for that application also. I know a red filter will reduce the light output some, but a small light would be great compared to using a heavy belt light like the coon hunters use. The beam would not have to project 100 yards as long as it will light eyes up at that distance. I have seen some red led lights, but most seem to be just for map reading, etc, not throwing a beam. Also, a dedicated red light kills me using it for other uses. Has anyone put a red filter on a light with similar output? What did the beam look like? Do you have pictures? Thanks.

Ive used fenix's red filter with thier P1Dce, and i just have to say the light is so bright that i dont think its red anymore..its more like, reddy-orange,might also be a product of it being a LED. you might spook animals because the light is not actually the red we are used to from red filtered incans....

You could get the T1 and modify it with a red LED, but im not sure how that will perfom..

Thanks for the reply, I had figured that if the high mode was too much the low would be about right. Fenix doesn't have a filter for the larger T1 yet, I had planned on using one of surefires flip up style filters. If you think the light might be too bright, I could always rig up a way to stack two filters. The object of the game is to scan until you see eyes approaching, you keep the beam of light just close enough to the critter to cause the eyes to reflect the light. When the critter is within range you light them up enough to ID and take a shot. I like the idea of the T1 because I can use it hand held to scan, and when the opportunity comes for a shot, put it in a mount on the shotgun to take a shot. I figure there should be plenty of light mount options as popular as mounting lights on shotguns and AR15s is now.

You might want to check into the red SureFire flip up filter that fits the U2. I have one on my U2 and even on the highest power it is still very red. I also have a T1 and the U2's head is only slightly bigger than the T1. I've never tried my filter on my T1, but if it is loose, a little electrical tape would fix it right up. With this flip up filter, you would be able to use the same light for ID'ing the "subject" also.

Just my $.02,
Roger

try cobra's method, sounds good, although being vegetarian, i cant condone hunting...:nana:

Thanks guys, looks like the problem I'm having now is finding someone who has one in stock to sell me. I suppose I'll have to back order one?

I can confirm the red flip up surefire one works "great" in color and even snaps on the top of the t1 WITHOUT the body though. Meaning the rubber housing of the filer does nothing, but the diameter of the filter itself "clicks" into place on the T1.... It seems pretty solid too. If you drop it, it might come off, but for general use it will stay on, on its own. At least mine does. The only shame is that you would have to break off the filter from the body (Via a little piece of plastic with a spring). its the flip-top mechanism.

Good luck!

I was looking at surefires newer style filter with the flip lense and the cam lock clamp. That way I can't lose it, and white light is just a flip away, so it can stay on the light permanantly. They have two models, one is just under the size listed for the T1's bezel, and another that is just over. I figured I'd try to find one locally to check for fit on the smaller one. If I need to order one, I'll go with the larger to be sure and fill the gap with some electrical tape, or bicycle inner tube.
