Replaceable MagCharger Battery Idea

I love my MagChargers, but the runtime isn't so great. I don't have time for them to recharge and I don't know of a way to recharge separate battery packs outside of the light. I'm thinking of buying a bunch of nimh 1/2D's and charging them in a normal D cell charger with a spacer. Aluminum bar stock wrapped in tape or shrink tubing, or a piece of wooden dowel with screws on either end and a wire run between the screws, or wooden dowel with a nut and bolt through it, or whatever else I come up with. Then I could switch out batteries as needed and recharge the whole mess of them at home.

Is there a reason this wouldn't work? It's just too obvious, someone has to have done this before. A search revealed nothing.

I use a Universal SmartCharger and this home built battery holder to charge my MagCharger packs.
