Requirements, which Peak?

Having been drawn to looking at Peaks for my next flashlight, I was wondering which one would fit my requirements. My last light was a MiniMagLED 2xAA, which began to flicker and continued to do so even after I put solder to thicken the two contact areas at each end of the internal circuit board. It got bad enough that while wearing it at work (I work around... uh, ships) on a headband, everytime I bumped a steel bulkhead or frame the light would shut off. I had to pull it out of the headband, turn it off and on again for it to work. Sometimes after doing this, while returning the light to the headband it would shut off again, just a simple change in orientation caused it to shut off. Long story short after so many cycles of this I ended up tapping, then banging the light in frustration against whatever solid surface was nearby and killed it.

Since the most recent LED light I had was the MM, I'd like my next one to be at least as bright and throw better running on AA NiMH batteries. I'd also like a runtime at least 2 hours - I occasionally have to try and read lettering in places accessible only with a hand-held telescoping mirror and that requires a good amount of light for a couple hours worth of inspections. Which Peak would meet these requirements?

What's your size requirements? I'm sure a Pacific on a 2AA body would be great for this application. Check out the "Pacific Tech Notes" thread in this subforum for more info.

Size-wise, as long as it's no longer than the MM LED that would be fine. I took a quick look through the Pacific design notes thread earlier and thought that it might meet my requirements. But since the output is in candlepower, I'm not sure how those numbers compare to the MM LED. It looked like the Pacific, Kino Bay, Atlantic, and Mediterranean all had 1x or 2xAA configs and could meet my needs, but although I have the 2007 Product line CD, I couldn't find any runtimes for them. What would the difference be between them (besides the Atlantic and Med being more $$)?

*edit to update my questions after looking through the Pacific tech notes thread in more detail.

Figuring out the configurations can be a challenge - given the state of the website. I believe that Caribbean, Mediterranean and Atlantic lights are only available in a 1xCR123 configuration - but I could be wrong.

The Pacific has a CR2, 1xAAA, 2xAAA and 1xAA option but I don't recall ever seeing a 2xAA option. Still - a Pacific 1xAA P4 ultra power would probably give you more than two hours of light as bright as the MagLED in a smaller package, and even more light in the 2xAAA package which would still be smaller than the MagLED.

I'd probably lean toward that configuration but the best thing to do is call them and speak to Kurt - tell him what you're looking for and he can guide you to the right power level and battery pack to meet your needs.

Hello,

All Peaks that run on 1 CR123 can be fitted with Peak's 2AA tube.

Kind regards,
Joris

Just got off the phone with Curt. He was extremely pleasant and helpful, just as you folks said. After speaking to him about what I needed, he recommended the Pacific in Super Ultra with the 2xAAA battery tube running on NiMHs. When I get the chance after I get home, I'll go order one in HAIII from their website. Thanks all here, and much thanks to Curt!

I know you will like the Peaks, I just saw an order go through for 9 various ones at work. Funny, I get laughed at for my red/white/UV Peak lights until people get sent to countries that start with vowels (A and I)

Now to see what single red LED Matterhorns, 7 LED 360nM UV Killamanjaro (1AA), Baltic SP AAA and Pacific HP with AA and AAA bodies do.

The hardest lights to pick correctly are given to non-flashaholics that require normal batteries and heading to odd-ball countries for a year using them in harsh conditions. I've not had one fail yet (out of around 30 lights so far) they just have to work every time. I am sleeping well tonight. :)
