I note that Lumileds has just posted a new revision to AB21, bin codes.
Revised AB21
While there are several minor changes, there are two worth noting.
For the flux "S" bin code, S has a separate definition for use with Luxeon III. This is to accommodate the fact that the minimum allowable flux for a Luxeon III is about the midpoint of the old definition for "S".
Perhaps more interesting, are the new color bin codes for the warm whites. The fact that they have published the revision to accommodate the warm whites suggests that they may be hitting the streets soon. One can ascertain that part numbers of warm white parts will include LXHL-MWGC, LXHL-NWG8, and LXHL-BW03. It is not possible to tell which parts these numbers are associated with. I note that Future Electronics already has the MWGC and BW03 parts listed with pricing but do not yet show stock. The color codes that lie on the Planckian locus are N0, P0, Q0, and R0 with CCT's ranging from 2950 to 3640 respectively. For those that don't care for the "coldness" of white LED lights, I predict that these warm white ones will be appealing. I personally anticipate that the R0 bin will be very nice. I can think of valid technical reasons why it will be more difficult to attain high flux bin codes in the warm whites compared to the existing whites. It remains to be seen whether this will be a reality. One test of this will be whether the introduction of warm white Luxeon IIIs is delayed since the Luxeon IIIs have a higher minimum efficiency spec than the 1Ws.
