I note that Lumileds has just posted a new revision to AB21, bin codes.

Revised AB21

While there are several minor changes, there are two worth noting.

For the flux "S" bin code, S has a separate definition for use with Luxeon III. This is to accommodate the fact that the minimum allowable flux for a Luxeon III is about the midpoint of the old definition for "S".
Perhaps more interesting, are the new color bin codes for the warm whites. The fact that they have published the revision to accommodate the warm whites suggests that they may be hitting the streets soon. One can ascertain that part numbers of warm white parts will include LXHL-MWGC, LXHL-NWG8, and LXHL-BW03. It is not possible to tell which parts these numbers are associated with. I note that Future Electronics already has the MWGC and BW03 parts listed with pricing but do not yet show stock. The color codes that lie on the Planckian locus are N0, P0, Q0, and R0 with CCT's ranging from 2950 to 3640 respectively. For those that don't care for the "coldness" of white LED lights, I predict that these warm white ones will be appealing. I personally anticipate that the R0 bin will be very nice. I can think of valid technical reasons why it will be more difficult to attain high flux bin codes in the warm whites compared to the existing whites. It remains to be seen whether this will be a reality. One test of this will be whether the introduction of warm white Luxeon IIIs is delayed since the Luxeon IIIs have a higher minimum efficiency spec than the 1Ws.

This should be useful, if nothing else. I overlaid the new (black lines) and old (blue lines) Luxeon color binning info to give a better idea of how they compare. This is good for ALL white Luxeons (I, III, V watt), except for the new "warm" whites:

Thanks LMM. You know what would be way cool? An assembled display of emitters at the centers and each of the corners of the x-y color space for each of the bins.

I did this a few weeks back...

LuxeonBinningColourChart.gif

I've had experience with both VXOV and VWAV.

The former had a definate hint of blue when compared directly (3-4 random samples) with an X3T. There were no rings, the whole spill around the hotspot was very very lightly blue. Don't get me wrong, it is still white when viewed in isolation.

The latter, VWAV, was all white despite the bin 3/4 overlay. I took a random sample of a dozen emitters. Theoretically, there would bound to be some white/blues amongst them but that wasn't the case in my test of 12.

We're all skirting around the magical W0 color bin. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Don's SVOJ and Charlie's SWAK...

Howard,
I copied that picture of yours to my hard drive, but I kept finding myself wanting one that looked similar to the ones in the AB21 binning pdf from Luxeon, so I made my own. I still like yours though! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Also,
According to Dat2zip, there are now SWAM Luxeon III's available at the shoppe...

And, finally, the 3w stars ElektroLumens just got were bin SYO (still don't know the last letter), and the emitters he got were bin # unknown. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

LED.... I was going to do an overlay with the Lumiled graphic but the (c) issue bothered me... hence the recreation. SWAM sounds not bad. I can't find it on his site. WA is good! Mr B's SWAK is even better. SYO?... personally I would steer away from that one given my high standards /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif for white Luxeons but if you can't specify binning when you buy, that is the price you pay. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Doug S... no problems. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hotbeam,

SV0's are for sure inferior! If you get any, I'll take them off your hands, at a discount of course. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hey Don
You might be confused between YO's and VO's /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hotbeam,

Looks like I need to either clean my reading glasses or get a stronger pair! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Never mind about glasses, no need to get them. Now, how about I buy your SYOJs off you /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hotbeam,
I don't think the copyright thing is an issue. One of the reasons I changed the colors was to avoid this problem. Theoretically, you can take the coordinates they give for the corner of each of the new bin code areas, and then plot them up that way. I basically made a whole new chart.

OK,

First - Thanks to all who did the necessary leg work to help identify and explain the Luxeon binnings /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Unfortunately, this dummy is now more confused than ever - and I need help /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I just bought my first 1W Stars labelled as follows:

Q2HW 0008804
2003LXHLMW1D

After studying AB21, it indicates that the MW1D is manufactured *after* WW27, and yet the bincode printed is "2H"...

Ignoring the post-WW27 charts, shall I assume that the following applies?

Q = 30.6-39.8 LM
2 = 5000-5500 K
H = 3.03-3.27 Vf
W = White

Or...have I missed something??

Thanks - John

Yes. 2003 = 20th week of 2003

Thanks Doug S -

That was my interpretation initially, I guess I was just confused by the sidebar notes relative to part numbers...

Thanks again - John

Hotbeam, I have just been staring at your chart "New Bin Coding System Chart - Colored" and was wondering if the green and yellow placements are swapped?

Not my area of expertise for sure so I'm trying to understand. In a color space/sphere I just thought I remembered hues went blue to green to yellow to red to blue circle.

Springnr... for completeness and to avoid any misunderstanding, I have swapped the yellow and green in the binning zones. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif They were originally there to indicate position rather than tint. Nevermind, hope it makes you happy now /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
