roll crimp removal

Hi everybody,

What is the best way to remove a roll crimp besides using a dremel
and blasting it to pieces. I've tried needle nose pliers, tiny
screwdrivers (and poking a hole in my finger in the process).

Any ideas?

It's probably soft enough that you could use a small hand file. Just get the roll crimp thin enough on it's edge to pull it off. Then continue filing it down to where you need it.

Assuming you mean on the Arc AAA/AA, I would "worry" it open with a jeweler's screwdriver as you tried. You could also cut it away with an Exacto. (Watch the fingers.) It's a fairly soft alloy. The one I took apart was very well potted in epoxy inside and I had to heat the head to get it out, destroying the LED in the process.

Hi 4sevens,

If it's the ArcAAA you're talking about, I used an Xacto to remove the crimp. It cuts pretty easily as tvodrd stated since it's so soft and thin.

Since I wasn't worried about preserving the LED or the circuit, I just drilled out the center of the circuit until I hit the base of the LED. Then I heat stressed the head a couple of times (torch lighter -> cold water -> repeat) and used a small screwdriver to push on the LED till the pill popped out. Drilling out the center of the circuit helped make it easier to push out for me.

Thanks for all the good advice. I am modding and ARC AA and the
infinity Ultra.

I finally gave up trying to preserve the crimp for future use
and the dremeled them. I just figure a way to get it connected later.
