Railroad lanterns are very collectible. Real railroad lanterns. Many offered for sale are railroad "style" lanterns or reproductions. The word fake can also enter here.

Very few real railroad lanterns were brass. Some special lanterns or conductors lanterns were nickel or brass plated, but very few. Most brass ones you find are reproductions.

The style, color and condition of the globe is frequently the largest determinant of value. They are glass and fragile and many did not survive even if the lantern body did.

Like most specialized collectibles, real knowledge is need here. There are many good sources.

One is: http://www.railroadiana.org/lanterns/pgLanterns.php

Nothing wrong with a reproduction as long as you are aware and it appeals to you on its own merits.

thanks I pass along the link. these are likely the real deal my bud is a eng with 40+ years railroading and pretty sharp. He can tell who used a particular light and where I.E. carman @ North Platte ect. These are lights not the burning type of lantern. we still refer to the lights as laterns.

thanks again
