Sanyo creates 450mW Blu-Ray laser

That is pulsed of course.. For writing drives, it's pulsed power that matters.

But that is not bad news for us AT ALL!

450mW Pulsed means 225mW CW with 8000 hours of life!

And even my puny 6x is doing 211mW through a plastic lens or 262mW through a custom made 405nm AR coated glass lens... ;)

We always overdrive laser diodes to close to their pulsed ratings CW. And they usually don't mind. 405nm diodes are different from reds, in that they can be pushed even higher, altho that results in a life of 3-20 hours..

A 450mW pulsed diode would do 250-300mW through a plastic lens still with a good life.. With the custom lens 310-390mW! (plastic lenses have huge losses)
