Can anyone suggest a replacement for a Vector VEC124? I'm looking for another small rechargeable spotlight that's actually bright, and I need help finding a bright one since the candlepower ratings seem to be... unreliable.

Primary use for this would be shining out the window to see what's going on across a couple acres of lawn. So it needs to be bright enough to illuminate a couple hundred feet out, but not so bright that it blinds the user with reflections off the glass. Otherwise I'd just get the Stanley HID and be done with it.

I've looked for the VEC124 itself but it shows every sign of being discontinued. Is Vector even still making lights?

:welcome:

I'd go with the Stanley. If it's capable of "blinding" you from glass reflections, virtually any powerful spotlight will do the same. In other words, if it's not going to be an issue for a halogen Vector style light, it's not going to be an issue for the HID either. All compact 12V SLA incan spots are going to be limited to the same 100W bulb so you're not going to find one brand that's particularly brighter than another. You can increase your throw by increasing reflector size but now you're into the big spots and away from the compact ones.

+1 on the Stanley HID. The best way to avoid blinding reflections from any light is just to hold it right up to the glass of the window and as far below your face as possible.

Those use the 130 Watt Halogen automotive bulb if I remember correctly. I'm not good with "base" styles" and their numbers so maybe someone else can chime in. Although, maybe the 130 Watt bulb only comes in one base style? Go to an auto parts store and buy a 130 Watt headlight bulb and that's probably it.

Thanks for the answers. How'd I know you guys would endorse that Stanley? ;)

Well, once bitten twice shy, and I've been bit both by glare off the storm windows, and by an unbranded lamp in the same general configuration with a higher rating that gave very little light. So I had to ask.

OK now my curiosity got the better of me, and I opened the old Vector up. Seems pretty easy to replace that battery. Maybe I'll do that and add the Stanley alongside.

The Stanley HID is a tremendous performer and is indeed one of my all time top recommendations, however you could also try the Stanley 2M Series 1365 lumen halogen spotlight $30 from Walmart. This light is incandescent like your old Vector, so it will not have the blinding sidespill and corona of the HID that might reflect off of the glass, as it has nowhere near the output of the HID.

The 2M Series is 100W though and will still be over twice as powerful as your old Vector was, and it is close to the Stanley HID in throw. I still do highly recommend the HID though, and if I had to choose between the two I would definitely go with the Stanley HID.

There you go.....the CPF motto....Buy Both!

+1, lol.
