Seriously?

welcome to the mad house! if you do a search at the top of the page you will find out alot about this light. i don't have one or for that matter even seen one up close but it's a surefire and they are one of the best manufactures out there. they do make less expensive lights also.

I have a surefire, i know they are generally kind of high, but thats crazy.

And the search feature isn't working, i have tried it several times lately.

I ordered a Beast II and am expecting delivery first part of next week.

Expensive is of course a relative term. You get what you pay for and the
Beast II is no exception.

Show me ANY other light in this class with a LIFETIME GAURANTEE from a
company that actually will be around for many decades to come. I'll save
you the time, there are none.

Sweet!!! Can't wait for pics and a review!!!

Got one word for ya: PASSAROUND:twothumbs:party::rock:

(I'll go first...):nana:

Woohoo! I'm looking forward to hearing what you think. Yes, there is already lots of info about the light already but it's alway neat when a CPFer gets one. Congrats.

Let's do the math..

1. Cost per unit of machining and extruding the metal... $46
2. Cost of all the molded plastic parts... $11
3. Cost of batteries... $125
4. Cost of HID and LED's... $142

5. Finding a customer base that will pay thousands... Priceless

Sure makes the Polarian 50w look like a steal.

1. Cost of running ones mouth on internet forums.....$29.99 per month
2. Cost of a basic clue...Priceless

Since you are such an expert, why not go into production? Make the Beast for $324, charge 5x that ammount for your profit, and you'll be rich. I'll take two.

Sounds like a reasonable place to start comparing.
So what are the differences in production costs between the Polarian and the Beast II?
What specific parts are so different and proprietary that make one "worth" $2000 and the other "worth" $7000?
I am absolutely, positively dying to know, and you seem to have some behind the scenes knowledge about it so maybe you can help.

Don't let my post count fool you and I won't let your post count fool me.

As much as I would love to join the bash fest, I think you math is a little off although your point is well-taken. If you actually look at the Hellfighter Kit/System, there is some serious machining going on there (read expensive esp when you consider volumes) in the light and the mount. I personally think it is way over-engineered, driving the cost way up and who knows what the mark up is...I would like to have one for collectors purposes.

Folks in theatre (from what I have gathered) really like the system. So there it is. A problem with a solution Surefire developed in SureFire style. Best-of-breed.

That being said, I always enjoy a good game of one-upsmanship and I plan to take them on in this area.

(Here is the shameless plug here) I am planning on making a US-Made, weapon-mounted/dedicated version of the Polarion PF40 for crew served weapons so that this is not the only solution available. Also looking at a much higher-power version in the near future....We will see.

Remote switching, Remote power/multiple battery source, quick disconnect so it can be used as a handheld if required.
Hoping to have a working proto by SHOT Show.

It will be pricey, but hopefully not in realms this discussion has centered around....

We will be at booth #23101 (Gold Hall - Large tented area)

I think we are going to have a couple of SF HIDs there, so it you want to compare them toe-to-toe with a Polarion HID, be my guest....We like those type of interactions!

I'm not really trying to start an all out bash fest, but doggonit, a $7000 flashlight is a bit ludicrous unless it's made out of solid gold.

I guess what struck me is that I just paid $21,000 for a brand new, fuel injected, aircraft engine (Mattituck Lycoming 180hp).
I immediately thought of that engine when I read about this $7000 flashlight.
I just don't see that the machine work or materials necessary to make a flashlight compares to what it takes to produce an engine that's reliable enough to hang one's butt at altitude.

Perhaps what struck me was the thought... "Let's see; should I buy this engine, or 3 flashlights?"

But ok, I'll let it go.
I'm sure some other people think I'm crazy to have spent over $400 on "just" a flashlight as well. (AE 25W Xenide).
And yea, there is very likely a Polarian in my future. :)

What aircraft is it going in. I fly a Glasair 1RG that I built. 200HP stock (angle valve) IO360-C1D6, it is "souped up" a little to produce 245 HP at 2700 rpm. Cruise is 200 Kt and about 8.5 gpm at 11,500 or 12,500. The electronic ignition provides a 10% improvement in fuel efficiency over stock due to timing advance with altitude which mags can not do.

$7000 is a crap load of cash to spend on a flashlight, I don't think anybody would argue with that!(now $400 on the other hand is cheap!)
Then again, if somebody was shooting at you, you might feel that such an extreme light is more practical than previously thought. I wouldn't buy a Beast myself, I can't spare the cash and don't have a need per se, but it sure is cool that companys like Surefire & Polarion make this stuff. I worked on a house a few years back that had a shake and copper roof, and the materials cost for the copper alone was well in excess of $100,000. To me, insane! To the customer, insignificant. But who am I to judge, I have a $500 Titan hanging around my neck as I type!:tinfoil:

It's kind of difficult to compare to an airplane engine, however...the Beast is much brighter!!!!:nana::grin2:

Zinster - It seems in all your improbable wisdom, you've forgotten to
share with us Surefire's cost of R&D on the Beast, Hellfire, and all related
technologies! :shakehead...:ohgeez:

mspeterson & Patriot36 - Looking forward to sharing thoughts, beamshots,
and pics with my fellow CPF'ers. It seems my B2 may even be delivered
by Friday or Saturday of this week. Please allow a little me time though
before initiating the passaround.!
