Can the LED assembly in an A2 be changed by dropping in a new one? If so is it possible to get different color modules from Surefire?

Yes, the LED Rings are interchangeable - three pesky screws hold it in place. Without all three screws, not all of the LEDs will light put.

I don't think it's possible to get the LED Rings from SureFire. You could try. They can't make the A2 fast enough [still!] so parts are in short supply I guess.

I read somewhere the L1 heads were not available separately because each color led heads needed a different amount of power. Would that be true for the A2 LED ring as well?

No, it is not true for the A2 - I've got one A2 and like about six different rings. They all work just fine.
The LED rings have tiny [resistor] thingies that I always assumed were different depending on the colour of the LEDs of the ring...

I don't know about the L1 though. I may ask if I remember.

Not to hi-jack your thread, how does the light output of the A2 compare with something like the Opalec Newbeam?

I've got an A2 and an Opalec, but I haven't seen the Opalec in about a year.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif ...guess someone else'll have to do this. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif
According to my website, the Opalec NewBeam measures 33,100mcd, and the A2 (white LEDs only) measures 25,900mcd.

Hey guys,

The LED rings like Al states have SMD resistors; one in series with each LED and these resistors are chosen specifically for each of the LED colors. The L1 has a completely "dumb" head with no circuitry what so ever; only an anode and cathode contact for completing the circuit with the body which houses the electronics. I believe that the high power circuit is a constant current boost circuit. The low power I believe is a simple resistive circuit. I have made various colored "dumb" heads to be hosted on the L1 and they all worked fine. I do think you will find that red and orange are pretty bright and this I would attribute to the low Vf of these LED's.

If I were to hazard a guess as to the lack of availability of seperate L1 heads, I think it might be due to SF's priorities in terms of production time. I would think that they would attempt to get caught up on all back orders prior to adding accessories and filling the shelves with the various flavors in options. Again, just a guess.

When I tried to get some other color LED rings for my A2, Surefire customer support said that wasn't possible. I understood this to mean that they wouldn't do it. Do you know of a way to make it "possible?"

When I asked I was told it wasn't available yet, implying that it might be an option at some future date. I think Size15s has some inside contacts that allow him some special priveledges not available to the rest of us common folk.

There may come a time when the L1 Bezels and A2 LED Rings can be bought from your friendly SureFire Dealers but I do not believe it will be any time soon.
Don makes some very good points as usual - suggestions for why this is the case that are very reasonable to me.

PK was kind enough to send me the various colour LED Rings. It's no secret that the majority of the SureFires I have are samples from SureFire.
I've often wondered which ones I'd buy if I didn't get sent them. The A2 would be one of them. With Red LEDs.
