So I ruined my KL4 while trying to open it. I learned now to use concentrated and well timed heat to crack open the loctite.

I tried to remove the LED Pill/driver part of the KL4 and managed to rip the wires and break the leads off the LED emitter.

The pill is attached to an aluminum base that has 4 holes. two to thread the wires thru and another larger pair.

Anyone have a tip or trick to pull the whole thing out without destroying it?

I had to tap directly on the emitter to back out the pill. but it cracked the Emitter.

Thanks

If you already open the head, the rest is easy.

Pull the circuit board with twisting and straighen the 2 leads.
You can access to 2 screws with slim screwdriver between circuit board and heatsink.

Do not cut the wires. It is not easy to replace them due to the protective adhesive.

There weren't any screws. The hardest part was that the metal base, that the led is mounted to, was very tight in the head. I had a very difficult time removng it.

It's a really strange thing!
Is it modded KL4?

Here is a disassembled shot.

Is it a new or an old KL4 ? - (Lux V or cree ?)

the older ones have the heatsink screwed to the back of the reflector/head, the electronics fit into that, and then the back bit is screwed onto it.

Doesn't matter old or new, the bulk heads are a bit different on the newer ones but all KL4s still have two screws that attahced the heatsink to the bulkhead. If you have a Cree than it is not a KL4.

I agree with ROK, it's easily disassembled that way, unscrewing the head is the only hard part. On some older ones (I've only encountered two like this), in addition to the small amount of thermal compound use, some will have a dab of epoxy on the side of the heatsink to hold it in place. Not hard to break it free but it will still have two screws holding it to the head.

The other larger pair of holes are for the two mounting screws. If you don't have the screws, perhaps someone else was in the head before you. It's highly unlikely that SF forgot to put the screws in. Sounds like you did not rip the wires of the driver so you are still ok. If you did, all is not lost, new wires can be soldered on, just unsolder the ground ring to get full access (not required but makes it easier) & remove the protective epoxy coating before unsoldering the wires.
