SF E-Series LOTC - little o-ring?

what is the purpose of the little o-ring in the E-Series LOTC?
Just asking because in my new black tailcap it is broken, I removed it and cannot find any difference. seems still watertight, too.

I believe this o-ring was more important when TailCaps did not lockout - the push button was loose in the TailCap.

Well it has another function - I guess it is important to ensure that there is no unintensional electrical contact between the button and the body by isolating the button in the centre of the body. I'm not sure how significant this is in reality of carry and use though.
