Can't get out of the desert! ARGH!
I think the title pretty much says it all. There're a lot of options, and I remember the SMJLEDs that fit in flashlight (where do you get those now anyway?).

SO what, in your opinions, are the best options either price or quality wise? And where do I get 'em?

OK OK, I'm mostly talking about which are the best LED replacement options for the PR 2 ("standard generic flashlight" I think) bases? Sorry I was interrupted by a phone call during the writing of that post. What's the best price-wise and what's the best quality wise? I'm looking for opinions. As far as the host, assume generic hardware store 2 D-cell or 4 D-cell lights or something of the sort.

The best options are the P60 style drop-ins if you are referring to which type has the most options. Second would probably be the Mag drop-ins. It is hard to determine what you mean by best though. Do you mean brightest? Cheapest? Most Durable?

Remember the "buckalight" conversion someone posted a while back? I have a couple of the lights that were used for that conversion hanging out here. ALSO I have several various 2-D cell hardware store and dollar store type flashlights hanging out. I'd like to avoid replacing the bulbs with another incandescent bulb when they go and also get the better run times. I see no reason to just toss these lights when the bulbs die and LED seems the way to go.

The "Buckalight" was a little mod someone posted a couple of years ago where they took one of those 84 cent Wal-Mart lights (that aren't sold there any more dangit), cut it down, put in a SMJLED in a PR-2 base, and ran it off a single 123 cell. It was tiny and bright, and since it ran off a lithium 123 cell it is a great little glove box light.

Throw all your old flashlights away and get some new LEDs. The only cost effective conversion is the Minimag 2AA to SMLJED for about ten bucks after batteries.

Go to Dx and look at the Q5 assortment. There is an Ultrafire 2CR123 that has six modes and will reflect from a quarter mile.

My favorite is an Akoray 1AA that says it has six modes but only has three: High,Low and Strobe.

The high is almost as bright as the 2CR123 and the low is bright enough.

They are about 22 bucks at Dx and this is my favorite new flashlight. I bought three and they are all powerful and compact, The quality is fine and the output is impressive.

Fairly old post, a couple of the links didn't work. Mostly what I was looking for were opinions, and the flashlight reviews posts that are linked there are pretty handy.
Almost all of them do not focus properly in a fixed focus flashlight. You need a M@g or other focussing light.
The SMJLED is about the only one that works with all (2 cell) torches. But at 1/2W is not bright by todays standards.
The Tectite also works but they are designed to produce a big spot instead of the traditional small spot plus spill (useful in their underwater torches). They are underdriven and not that bright. There are some radial artifacts in the beam.
