FWIW, I just saw this on the Shop Floor Talk forum. No relation to the seller, although he's been on the bbs for quite a while. $600, located in W. Central Florida

He says this I need to sell my old South Bend 13X40 lathe. It has 3, and 4 jaw chucks. A Face plate. a lantern tool post. It's 240 Volt 3 phase. You'll either need 3 phase in your shop, or a VFD, or a rotary converter. If you want help installing a VFD to power this machine from single phase, I'll be happy to write up a description of the process - not claiming to be an expert, but I've done this 3x in my shop, with great results.

I'll try to hook you up with the owner if you'll PM me.

I thought it was a Heavy Ten, but it looks very like this one.

I wonder which model I have now - but whatever - if well looked after they are great lathes.

Colin.

I believe both these machines are known as "single tumbler", referring to the QC gearbox. A single tumbler machine has only one hand lever, many SB lathes have two (like my Light Ten).

Yours is in nice shape, Colin. Not a whole lot of machines of that age with original Battleship Gray SB paint. As long as all the Gitts cups are kept oiled, they will run forever. And even if the headstock bearings go without oil in the cup, there always seems to be a drop in the bearing itself. Those bearings are rarely ever hurt.

I thought it was a Heavy Ten
Yours does look like a Heavy Ten, just a slight difference in the headstock cover design between the 13 & the 10.

Looks like a larger version of my Heavy Ten. I'm in west central FLA too. I wonder what condition the ways are in?

That's always the issue ... the smaller machines usually don't see the abuse of an 18" or 24" machine (one company bought a big SB to cold twist fence pickets:().

The problem is time, and lots of it. Especially in a humid area. But the price is low & it may be worth a look.
